Triggers ain’t trash and are easy to clean if you’re a know what you are doing. Gotta filet them from inside out.

Please explain how this is done. Post a video. Seems like you would have to be Jonah and the whale to make that happen. 🤣

Don’t u tube but it’s simple. Get the point of your filet knife under the tough skin and then cut from inside of skin out down along backbone then just proceed like anf other fish. You beat the armor outside skin by not cutting through the armored side. I cleaned hundreds, if not thousands in my offshore days with no electric and could clean one as fast any other fin fish. I had no boat and was a ride slut who fished a lot because I had a great book, a lot of knowledge and took care of boat chores including cleaning the fish. My buddy and I would always give the boat owner the red snapper and big gags fillets “to show our appreciation for the ride”. We kept the triggers and scamp and laughed our whole way way home.

They do it the same way I do. Start at the butt and work from there. But the one guy pulled the skin right off the fillet like a catfish. I’ve never done that and that’s impressive! I just hate I got to wait until next season to try that technique.

Cut around the trigger fish. Pick up a small corner of the skin with needle nose pliers. Roll the pliers a couple times and rip the skin right off.

On Triggers, the skin is soft at the base of the dorsal fin. I slip my filet knife in there and filet toward the head....then turn and filet to the base of the tail. Lay filet flat and press down with filet knife and cut the hide of. Done!!
