Talked to a guy at wms and he said they were out of the wms summer spot, and didn't know when they would have it.
He said the aeschynomene is hard to beat in small plots and is very browse tolerant. But seed is very scarce and is very expensive.

Aeschynomene is a vetch. I’m not certain if it’s exactly joint vetch. I found it initially as “deer vetch” but I think they are the same. It makes up about 25% of WMS’ Summer Spot mix with buckwheat and alyce clover making the balance.
I’ve been harvesting and saving seeds of narrow leaf vetch from my yard. I almost have a handful.

I found vetch in a mix at wilborns outdoors in cullman. It has peas,beans, buckwheat. millet,sorghum, vetch and other seed
that I can't remember. I believe like 14 different seeds if I'm not mistaken for $50 for 59lb.

Kind of hard to tell, but the Sumer Spot is starting to germinate. Got a little under 3 acres of RR Soybeans inside the e-fence in the background. Need to hit it with foliar fertilizer and glyphosate soon.

Just a question we no till drilled plots yesterday into standing ceral grain fields. Also we didn't spray or
bushog. We are trying to stay away from alot of chemicals and plowing. Anyone else have any luck
With this type of planting? Pros and cons ?

Dr. James Woods has a lot of info about this strategy on his website, growingdeer.tv. I believe once they drill the seed they run a crimper over it to knock down the grain.

I recently planted that at one of my leases. I’ve gotten to where I just use them exclusively. They let you prepay for fall mix and fertilizer and it saves a ton of money. Deer have hammered the stuff I get from there as well

If your cereal grains were thick enough to suppress weed growth then I'd think you should be ok.......If you have a lot already emerging then its likely gonna compete with what you planted.

I don't have a drill, but I broadcast into standing cereals, and then run over them with my flail mower. Then in the fall, I just broadcast cereals and brassicas back into what is left standing. If I want to up the organic matter, I add sunn hemp and then bush hog it, after I broadcast fall blends.

I have to get out and do some cutting on my lease. Some of my plots are tall!!

I didn't see alot of weeds. Some of the plots were a good bit thicker than others.
My thoughts and I may be wrong , by planting into it standing may give the peas and beans a
Chance to establish . We may try and mow a couple of the plots to see how they do compared to the other ones.

I don’t have a drill either so I’m trying to stay with seed that only needs soil contact. I planted the WMS summer patch two weeks ago. Haven’t been up to see the results yet but I know I’ve had plenty of rain. When I got there I found I had a decent amount of red clover and joint vetch growing in my little 1/3 acre plot. My cereal grains were headed out pretty well and about 4’ tall but relatively sparse(as in I could see the clover and vetch that was about 2’ tall maybe. I broadcast my seed, sprayed the plot with ArrestMax, then drove around with my Z mower(blades off) to push the grains down and press the seed in.

I have a log deck I wanted to plant. My cereal rye was about 5 feet tall, so I cut a 4ft swath right down the middle, so I could see, after I broadcast sunn hemp and sorghum into it. I felt like leaving the rye standing for now was better, since it would shade the soil and allow the seeds I broadcast a better shot at germinating because the ground was actually pretty soft under foot. Hoping we get some rain in the next day or two. Most of my other fields I broadcast a blend into, although the other 2 log decks got a heavy seeding of sunn hemp and sorghum.

Soybeans up and looking good. Have a little RR Corn scattered in there too. Hope I can raise the fence n a few weeks.

Got the fence pulled up to top of t-post in two spots, but they so scared of that poly tape they haven’t found the beans yet.

That looks good. Last I saw of my corn it was about knee to waist high. I’m hoping after I fertilized that it’s starting to come on now
