For a 6 year old: I’d buy a rifle he could

- carry A LOT with fear of marring it up
- shoot A LOT without fear of developing a flinch (recoil and report)
- reasonably accurate

For $3k …. Goodness. I’d get a Ruger American shorter barrel/Compact in 6.5 Creedmore with a threaded barrel. Beat the crap out of it with no fear. Buy a threaded suppressor to decrease recoil and report. Buy electronic headphones on top of that. I’d get a scope with high eye relief and field of view. This translates to a large ocular size (which with a 60 degree throw on the ruger American works well). All the rest devote to practice ammo.

If yon have money left over, buy a .22 for target practice

I have a friend who is a member at the B'ham Country Club in Mountain Brook. He thinks that is a bargain, but he also thinks my tractor payment is outrageous, even though my monthly payment is less than his.

For a 6 y.o. I would go Tikka T3x or Christensen in .7-08 or .308. With some really good glass. A Steyr Pro Hunter is also a good choice. That’s what my younger son started with in a .308 when he was 7. He is 23 now and hasn’t changed a single thing. That’s why never encourage people to buy smaller caliber rifles (.243, 6cm, or single shots). I didn’t want my boys to be looking to get another rifle by the time they turn 18 and then the youth gun goes into a closet and never sees the light of day again.

.308 is pretty much the perfect caliber to start with that they will not outgrow IMHO.

The Ruger American I bought my son was a rust bucket POS.round forearm sucks off bench or shooting house window
My buddies did shoot well but ours sucked.i know most times they are wonderful and my accuracy expectations are much higher than most.
Does Steyr make a prohunter anymore?

Throwing one out there I'm not sure mentioned yet weatherby Sporter in 308.
Wood and blued nice rifle to hand down

At 3k I'd probably go bergara premier canyon 308 with a Leupold, trijicon or meopta scope for remainder . several decent scopes in the $400-900 dollar range.actually if your smart this is where your bargin is.maybe not smidt and bender but good hunting Scopes

No Sense in buying budget rifle with high dollar scope.that cheap rifle will still shoot like an economy rifle
That cheaper glass will still shoot bugholes weather it be Leupold, meopta, trijicon .hell tasco , Bushnell for that matter at 100yrds

A Swarovski on a ruger American will still shoot like an economy rifle with cheap plastic stock

I'll take a cheap Simmons scope on a high end rifle any day .not really
But it will shoot same at 100 yards.
Sorry but it's true

Browning x bolt,Tikka,bergara,weatherby.
Weatherby vanguard Sporter as a nice classic hand me down.
Tikka anything as good all-around rifle not to worried about banging up
Christensen messa would be jam up also
Bergara premier canyon
Hmmm I'm sure I'm leaving out several.lol

But just for killing deer they all work even the cheap ones
.tiny groups consistently another story throughout a brand name not really on lower end rifles except Tikka

Only drawback to the T3x I can see for a younger shooter is not being able to cycle the bolt and load/unload without the safety off. I really like my T3x Hunter 6.5 Swede but that’s my biggest gripe, other than the polymer magazines. But it seems everyone is going to them. Always been a fan of a blind box/floor plate magazine system. Not too ashamed to say I’ve gotten to the woods and realized I left a detachable magazine at the house.

I know someone who had bolt slightly bumped up out of battery and didn't realize it and rifle didn't fire on a nice buck and buy the time they cicyled bolt deer was not able tobe seen again to shoot?
Actually a good feature of a Tikka imo
Bolt can be bumped out of battery on several rifles but not a Tikka...
Remington 700 and Ruger American to name two

Hunted with Remingtons most all of my life and never experienced it. Hunted with a Ruger American one time and had it happen. Stalking a doe on a young clear cut hillside and apparently knocked the bolt up a touch. When I pulled the trigger it just slammed the bolt handle down into battery and the rifle did not fire.

i didn't say no one should spend that , just said i wouldn't .i have good bit tied up in guns but about a $1,000 complete setup is good for me .id rather set up 3 guns than buy just one rifle how other spend they money up to them.

My wife shoots a browning micro medallion with a nice bausch and Lomb scope. They can still be found on gunbroker, and shoots excellent. I am building me one in 358 for a woods gun. They are smooth short and the bolts work easy. I like the swing down floor plate with an internal magazine which I can pop out and give to her when we get set as well makes for easy loading and unloading.
