Browning white gold Abolt Medallion in 300 or 7 mag This! And put the finest optics on it. Buy it now and you hunt with it. And give the boy your slug gun and tell him the setup is his when he turns eighteen. It works with Grandkids.

I'd insist on the 7/08 or .260. Elk are going to appear in his lifetime from up North and I'd prefer NOT to have a .243 or creepmore. Thats what both my daughters hunted with was a Rem .260 mod 7 with a youth stock..."The Death Trap"...... That little rifle is a bad man, dont be fooled.... It will knock them em in the dirt...

I have two Tikkas (308 and 260) and they are both sub MOA. However my Savage Model 111 in 30-06 groups even tighter. With 150 grain Winchester soft points, it's like a laser beam.

$3k will get you two mighty fine rifle/scope combos from the world famous BCLC Outdoor Emporium.
1) Tikka Superlite SS .260Rem - Burris 4.5-14x42 - 6 1/2 boxes of ammo
2) Kimber Montana SS .30-06 - Steiner 3-15x50 - couple boxes of ammo
The Tikka is like new and the Montana has a very low round count, excellent condition.

I dont think there is a better caliber made for whitetail deer than a 7-08. My favorite rifle ever is a Sako Finnlight in 7-08

Steyr Prohunter .308, add a Schmidt&Bender Klassic or Zenith. That is a setup that a kid would never need to improve upon as He gets into adulthood. Hard to get much better for hunting whitetail deer.
