I'm looking at getting a CDL license and I know there were some changes that started this year. I've read stuff online but its a little unclear. I had a fried at church trying to get an add on to drive a bus at church and he said you have to take classes even to add extra endorsements. He said it was a around a 2 week class and acted like it was longer if you were getting a new CDL. The classes were fairly lengthy and expensive for someone just needing them for personal use. I'm reading different stuff online and can't seem to get a sure answer. Can someone with a little more knowledge lay out the new requirements? Can this new class be taken online or do you have to go to an actual in person class? thanks

I'm in the process of obtaining mine. I went to a course with the county because I'm a city employee. It involved cramming a 6 week course into 5 days. Passed it and got my learners permit. Hopefully take my final test this week. Order you a CDL manual. You will need to know air breaks. The pretrip inspection is pretty tough. You will have to point out everything on your truck including under the hood. Backing several ways plus road time.

You will actually have to go to school now for a new CDL or any new endorsements. It’s gonna cost $2200 at Beville state and probably about the same anywhere else. If you go to Chicago, Miami or Houston and find the right person you can just buy one for $500 if you speak the non English

You have to go to school now? You can’t just go to the DMV and take the test and then past the pre trip and driving portion?

Thats pretty much what my friend was telling me from church, I think he had went to Wallace state. Thats ridiculous, a money grab like normal. Do you know what the class is called or what the certification is called that this class meets? Surely they would offer it online.






You had to take the class before getting the permit or is there an order in which you have to do it? I plan to study for it in the event I can swing everything and justify a CDL for personal use and the possibility of using it in the future. I ran heavy equipment for 10 years on a site, some with air and some with hydraulic brakes. I'm somewhat familiar with them anyways so maybe that won't be too bad, though I'm sure there are things by the book that I don't know and need to study up on.

Yes had to take a course to get permit. My class was free but I was out around 100 for test but got that back. Nephew did the 6 weeks at Calhoun and was over 2k. And you have to be exact on air brake test or it's automatic fail. I can tell you how but too long to type.

Once you pass the written part.....go to the Troopers' Office in Walker County for your road test-----much more friendly/easy. You'll have to have a Rig with someone else driving it up there who has a CDL of Course.

Must be a National thing because Oregon switched over to that same requirement.

There’s an app called CDL prep. Get it and study every word on it and go take your permit. After that find a company that will basically give you a 40 hr class and they will teach you everything you need to know. That’s what I had to do. It’s a pain in the ass now thanks to Biden

They told me to study chapters 2 and 5 to prepare for class and test would be on Wednesday. So I did. Monday they came by the table and laid a 514 page book with 32 chapters. Ask if this was for Wednesday test? Said no. Test on that book is 7am Tuesday!!!! I studied my butt off. Passed the test. Won't tell you what you make but has to be 80 or above.

Have get a DOT physical every 2 years to drive . If on blood pressure med every year . Mines coming sat. Got be in pretty good shape now to pass that thing . I go to chiropractor get it done . Easier than a dr. If your not working for a company you got make sure u send copy to Montgomery office or they will revoke your license. I grandfathered in 90s when they started this crap . Written test easy if u study .if driving school bus , wrecker or something like that you don t need the combination part, but I would get it anyway so you can drive anything. From what I’ve heard the hazmat part is really hard if you have take it . Have to remember all the symbols of chemicals. I didn t take that or need it .

Yes/No. The training requirements (class) are totally separate from taking the two actual CDL tests. This is Federal law that took affect about a year ago. Getting a CDL now is much more involved. Al lot of Jr colleges now offer the training which currently runs about $2,500. Looking at about 2 weeks class time (theory), pass test at 80% or better and have behind the wheel training.
There is also a Clearing House requirement where all drivers have to be registered in a database.

I working Class B. Hopefully be driving a knuckle boom bulk trash and debris truck we just purchased. Thing is kinda fun to operate

No way the average joe who needs to haul his tractor on his gooseneck a few times a year is going to take off work 2 weeks from his regular job or more to get a cdl.
Farm tags are supposed to be a work around but from what ive heard they will be cracking down on those as well.

Go to esd trucking school in Decatur it's very simple they give u exactly what u need to know and nothing more u start hands on driving on day 2 or 3 and that's all u do...they's a few hours of online training but its simple. They are not strict on u coming to class I prob missed a week out of my 4 weeks.

I got mine a couple of years Ago, before the law changed. You now have to take the class and it can get expensive. There is an app called CDL prep, it has all the questions in it for the written test for your permit.

My test is tomorrow. Did a walk around this morning along with air brake test. I'll have time for one more practice in the morning.

I got my cdl for like $100. You only have to pay for classes if you don’t have the truck to take the test. If you have the truck available to drive you just have to take the computer test to get your permit, then show up with the truck and a licensed cdl driver to take the driving test
