From the I65 bypass exit all the way to US231 was the happening place back in the day. Best shopping and eating places were right there. Now it looks like a third world country.

Man, that place was legit back in it's prime. Went to several sorority and fraternity formals there. If you bumped into someone and they said they were staying at the Governors House, you thought "They got money!" That side of town used to be really decent. Red Lobster was a good restaurant back then. If you wanted to really impress your date, you took her to Steak & Ale at the intersection of S. Blvd and Troy hwy. That area is sadly now a waste land. Montgomery mall, the mall across the street on McGhee road, the skating rink, Macaroni Grill, ect. ect. ect. all that was pretty good 25 years ago and definitely was back in the 80's.

I did see on heck of a fight at the Krystal there one night though. Me and some fraternity brothers had been to Brautigan's down the street listening to Eli or some other current bar band and needed the usual late night Krystal run. Just after we walked in and got our order of about 30 burgers, all hell broke loose inside. 2 black girls started fighting and man it was on! More of the same folks jumped in and within seconds it was about 7 folks wailing on each other. They were fighting inside and then it progressed to outside . One girl grabbed another one and pinned her to the hood of a car, took off her shoe and commenced to beating the hell out of her. There were folks chasing each other around cars, fighting in the parking lot, screaming and cussing. Man it was a sight! We were laughing so hard one guy peed himself!! The mananger was on the phone with the police screaming "They all beating the hell out of everyone here!! Get over here now!!! NOW!!!! dammit NOW!!!" We managed to get the rest of our burgers and bailed before the cops got there but we still laugh about that today!!

That Honey Baked Ham store refuses to move. It's also one of the most poorly run honey baked ham stores I've ever been to.

Eli playing at Brautigan's ... holy cow, that's two names I haven't heard in a coon's age.

What was the name of the trashy trendy little drinkin' spot over near Montgomery County Club back in the '80s?

The Rusty Nail was for a nightcap, sorta like Norm's in B'ham.

Proud Rusty Nail alum here. Rarely missed a happy hour there. I lived in Normandale. I'm sure we crossed paths at the Nail

It is kinda doing that all on its own. But, nearly every town, large and small have areas in them that have changed drastically, either due to neglect or folks moving in with a whole different attitude and culture, which sometimes results in the same appearance.

I have seen lots of places in my travels and have wondered what the place was like in its prime. Sometimes there is an easy to find history about them and sometimes there is not.

I grew up within a mile or so of the Montgomery Mall and Governors House over by JD and Dannelly, and every time I have to drive by there it makes me sick to see what it has become. I remember seeing the first Star Wars at the Mall Twin and Rocky Horror at the Martin Twin. That was back when both of those movies were standing room only with folks sitting in the aisles. I can't count how many times I went to a party of somekind at the Governors House when I was a teenager, but they always ended great for me.

Oh God... You had to mention Norm's. I remember many nights coming out of Norm's and seeing the sun coming up. Those were the days...

I remember Vova Nova playing there a lot. Libba played the flute and I had a crush on her.

A few years ago, Mrs. Irish and I were at a wine bar near Pepper Place and Glen and Libba were there playing lounge music. After they played Mrs. Irish and I invited them over to our table for drinks and catching up.

Libba still looked good in short grey hair. After a little conversation and some drinks I told her right in front of her husband and Mrs. Irish, "You know back in the day I had a huge crush on you." grin She was very flattered. Mrs. Irish was cool, because she knows her man and is not a jealous person, and Libba's husband Glen has probably seen lots of guys making eyes at her. It was amazing to see their relationship lasting so long in that kind of business. That was a fun night.

Eli was pretty regular at the War Eagle Supper Club back in my days. I might have seen them a time or a dozen.
