Anybody ever planted forage oats? I've heard good about them from one buddy that hunts in Barbour County. We planted either Coker or Buck Forage oats when we had a club( it was whichever was available with the best frost tolerance). I don’t recall exactly which now. I put out a mix of the forage oats and winter wheat two seasons back. The oats did really well until our second round of freezing temps then they disappeared. I have a little dappled sun woods plot that I’ll likely broadcast some into just for giggles. I have a decent stand of vetch growing there now. I’m in Monroe county for reference.

That will be great protein Overland - i got a buddy doing all durana on his fields - started converting last year TDog, that’s what I am hoping. If this is successful, I will probably convert another six - 10 acres to Durana next year. Everything I’ve read about Durana is positive.

Anybody ever planted forage oats? I've heard good about them from one buddy that hunts in Barbour County. That's all I plant and I plant a pile of plots. Never had anything hold up to deer pressure like they do. I've got over 70 plots to plant this year and that's what they'll all get!

Winter Wheat and Dixie Crimson Clover. Plant Abruzzi Cereal Rye in a few of the more sandy fields. Will be adding Durana clover to the wheat we plant in two three acre fields. Hope I can fully covert those fields to Durana and not have to replant each year. I like Durana, and I had hoped it would handle the summer heat better than Whitetail clover, and perhaps it does, but its not significant. Mine all got thin this summer. I think my deer like Whitetail clover better. i think whitetail clover gets taller. But I will say I didn't do anything until after Turkey season, and I think that is to long. I think I should have gone in and mowed the fields and fertilized and sprayed them before Mid May. I do know I have struggled with weed control as the summer wears on. If I am not getting adequate rain, they I don't like to cut or spray clover. I haven't been able to cut mine in the summer in 2 years due to lack of rain. So if I get in there early and spray with Imox, it kills the current weeds, but then in a month, its back to the same story. I just ordered 2 18 pound bags of whitetail clover, so I am going to plant it on the smaller fields, and look into planting some Eagle Soybeans on the big ones this spring.

Lockjaw - Are you top seeding with wheat in the fall on your Durana plots are just waiting for them to rebound with cooler temps and rain during the fall? No I will top seed them with wheat/rye and some brassica's. But not until it looks like we are going to get some rain consistently. I got a deal on 36 pounds of whitetail clover, so I plan to plant that this fall, and then I also bought 50 pounds of crimson and 50 pounds of arrowleaf. I am sort of re-thinking my strategy a little. I want year round food for the deer. Clover is the obvious answer since I can't have big plots, but some of my bigger plots just get to much sun exposure in the summer. I also want to try to plant the crimson and arrowleaf in places I can let it go to seed before I cut it.

We already sown a few of ours with WMS Bama blend. The others will likely get Co-op buck blend and I may top sow some Durano

I stopped by my local feed store just to check in and they had a rack of last years seeds for 1/2 price. Picked up over $120 worth of clover and chicory for $64. Those hard, coated seeds will not have germination problems.
"Cull" is just another four letter word...
