Second season I believe. No more than third season.

I planted crimson and arrowleaf last fall, and then didn't mow it until I was sure it seeded out.

For reference:
Whitetail clover

Durana

Neither look like this right now, thanks to the hot dry weather. And the Whitetail one was ruined last summer by the loggers, so I have to start over with it. Some still came back though. Hopefully my skid steer guy makes it out friday to push all the mess the loggers left off, so I can lime it and plant the rest of it.

If the loggers run their equipment/trucks on your plot, look into getting a chisel plow or subsoiler run over your plot. A single shank subsoiler will be slow but they can be bought pretty cheap.

I have a subsoiler and have used it on most of the fields. It's tough on some of the decks though, especially with a dry summer. These decks are usually devoid of topsoil, so you have to start at square 1. So I just want to plant something and let it grow and die, and then plant something else, and try not to disk it.

I think I am going to go back to beans/peas/sunn hemp next spring on my bigger fields. I will just disk them and plan on subsoiling every 3 years or so. Trying to get a big field with alot of direct sunlight to stay in clover is tough, with a hot dry summer. Not to mention mine get alot of turkey traffic too.

A chisel plow with a new set of teeth is a wonderful implement

I don’t spray mine. I plant mid September and bushhog after broadcasting my seed and fertilizer. It doesn’t get bushhogged again until planting time in mid September. Turkeys nest in it in the Spring and fawns use it for cover in the summer. It has been working great for me for years.

A real chisel plow, not a field cultivator, for $300 would be a great price. Theyre usually 3 to 4 times that for a five shank

It was an 8’, looked like 11 shank but reduced to 9.

Yes, I basically just cut the plot out of it and leave the perimeter.

We did this a few times at a friends place and it worked well. Problem was Jerry was set in his ways that’s not how it’s done mindset. Gotta get great seed to soil contact. Most don’t realize seedling vigor matters.

A disk is useful. Like when you have a road you want to plant. Took me about 10 to 15 passes due to compaction, but.... I bet this stops alot of deer crossing this road.
