"A Springfield, Mo., high school football controversy is currently being heard in court. If allegations made by quarterback Kylan Mabins are true, Kickapoo High School’s coaching staff has a problem with homophobia and racism.

After starting on Kickapoo’s football team during his sophomore and junior years, Mabins transferred to rival Glendale in March 2023 with the intent of playing his senior year there.

However, Kickapoo protested the transfer and the Missouri State High School Activities Assn. ruled Mabins ineligible in July. Mabins took them to court and the case was heard on Monday. During the hearing, Mabins (who is Black) testified about enduring racist and homophobic vitriol from the Kickapoo coaching staff, which prompted him to transfer.

According to a report from the Springfield Daily Citizen’s Steve Pokin, Mabins told the court of a meeting where one of Kickapoo’s coaches attempted to motivate him to focus on throwing the ball to multiple receivers. He did so by asking if Mabin and his preferred receiver were “lovers.”

When questioned by the MSHSAA’s lawyer if the coach’s question was intended to be facetious, Mabins answered that the coach was being “demeaning.”
It’s not hard to imagine football coaches using this straight-up homophobia in a bygone era as a “challenge to Mabins’ manhood” and a way to imply that he was weak. In 2023, though, this kind of language is clearly seen for what it is: hateful and abusive.

As Mabins continued to testify, it also appeared to be the tip of the iceberg. He related another instance from practice where he lost a footrace to his back-up quarterback who was white. Afterwards, one of Kickapoo’s coaches snidely remarked, “I thought Black guys were supposed to be fast.”

Mabins told of another moment where he and some of his Black teammates were playing rap music in the weight room. At one point, a Kickapoo assistant coach entered and told them, “You people might listen to this music, but when I’m in here, I’m not going to listen to it.”

If these allegations of homophobia, racism, and hate speech are true, it’s understandable why Mabins would want to leave Kickapoo’s team as quickly as possible.

Springfield Public Schools attorney Ransom Ellis told the court that that the school district had investigated Mabins’ allegations and had hired a St. Louis-based law firm to lead it. However, Mabins’ lawyer countered that no one from the investigation had interviewed the Mabins family.

A decision in the case has not been reached."

Another plot line here is that Mike Mauk had become a thorn in the side of SPS administration. He has an age discrimination lawsuit pending against the district. It was filed in 2021, when Mauk was 62, by Bolivar attorney Jay Kirksey, who happens to be the lawyer representing the Mabins family. Maulk was let go in 2023.

Not taking up or defending anyone, because I don't know the situation, we are just judging from afar, So I'm not going to judge this too harshly at this point simply based on the race of the kid...

Firstly, what I don't understand if the kid was not the starter or starter material, then why would the school care if he transferred?

Apparently he was a good enough player that they didn't want him as the competition at the other school.

Secondly, if the coaches said some derogatory chit to your son, would you feel differently about the situation?

If those two "examples" of homophobia and racist were derogatory, I wouldn't even know what to call the shitt that my coaches talked back when I played.

He would have never made it in the 70’s early 80’s under our coach. One of his favorite sayings was, “You’re playing like you are ****ing your mother? So get her tit out of your mouth and hit someone.” You could always tell who started - the front of your helmet was covered in Red Man chewing tobacco spit. We are all hard of hearing from him hitting us on top of the helmet with his whistle.

Heck, all football coaches were in the 1970s and 80s. Ours was fond of grabbing your facemask and shaking it. I don't remember anyone wanting to sue them for it. If you did anything that you knew wouldn't fly, it earned you some time as the bull in the ring.

My son had a lot of derogatory comments thrown his way through high school and college baseball. I look at it as motivational tools. The problem with people nowadays is they are way too soft. Everything hurts their feelings. Too many feelings nowadays. Tough men will soon be a thing of the past.

I came up in the 70’s/80’s and I have to agree with Metal and Just. Those coaches back then were like drill sergeant and would chew that azz but most players (real players) aimed to please those sadistic coaches and respected them.

I grew up in the 1960's and 1970's. I also graduated from Parris Island. So I've had a lot of stuff said to me that can't even be repeated here. I lived through it and very little bothers me.

So if a black coach told your son he was a puny little sissy white kid and shouldn't be playing football, you would be OK with that, because it would make him tough?

My point is, you can be tough on people and hold them accountable and not be a derogatory jackass. It's possible, because I do it all the time. There are ways to motivate people and not have to be a prick about it. Unfortunately some people get into a position of power over other people, it goes to their head, and they get on a power trip. I see it all the time.

Bull in the ring wasn’t a punishment for everybody. Some of us liked it and got in fights to be the first bull.

This is pretty weak... he would not have survived one day on a football team in the 80s or 90s.

You're probably asking the wrong guy, because I think that literally everyone is racist, because it is embedded in our genes from the time when we were all in various tribes. If you've ever seen wolves, animals are the same way. Any "outsider" is considered a threat. It's just a natural human and animal trait. We all have natural bias against people that don't look like us regardless of race, creed, religion, etc...

Regarding Deion's comments, he believes that black people are superior athletes, and is clearly shocked that a white guy can run that fast. But it was fine for him to say it on national TV, because he's a black guy. If a white commentator said exactly the same thing, he would probably be fired. And that's a problem in society today.
