Trash it and build a new one. Lots easier to work on new than refurbish the old. Ask me how I know. I’m bad about fixing things when I should just replace with new. Plus it would probably cost less figuring time to take it apart sandblast everything coat it and put it back together.

Trash it and build a new one. Why? I'm being paid by the hour to do it. Some of yall re full of bad useless advice.

I’d build that firebox out of 1/4” plate and use T-handles “3/8 bar stock” to open the doors also made of 1/4”plate The dampener can be cut in the shape of a hourglass and cut the cover plate the same way just a little bigger Build a shelf out of #9 flat expanded metal and put it 1”off the bottom of the firebox to allow airflow

That firebox can also double as a stove top to cook bake beans or make pies and cakes on

There are several calculators on-line to help design firebox size/stack sizing. The two basic designs are reverse flow where the firebox and stack are on the same end with a plate running almost the entire length of the cooking surface. The other design uses tuning plates on a rack that are adjustable to allow smoke through and reduce the amount of hot spots.
"Cull" is just another four letter word...

Guess i'll be adding to the useless advice 😁 But no way I'd be leaving my Smoker with someone who has 0 experience with Smokers. HOWEVER ifn the builder would let me offer suggestions/advice i may be willing...
