I was ready to give up bow hunting yesterday. Only about the 52nd time I have said that. Took my son to the doctor on Friday morning for a follow up appointment, and had time to hunt Cahaba that evening. Went in fairly blind, but a spot I knew should have the only white oaks in the area. I was literally getting hit multiple times by acorns while in the tree. Wind was swirling, but was just happy to be in a tree. Heard something coming down the SMZ, turned out to be a few turkeys. About 30 minutes later, hear something coming from a different direction. I went ahead and stood up, got better positioned. Couldn’t believe it, it was a buck. First buck I have ever had in range during archery season. He was walking right on the edge of the hardwoods and the thicket. Of course, I forget the idea of being calm. I was on a hill, so he was almost at eye level, 15 yards away. I checked for enough points to be legal and rushed my shot, but hit him broadside and was certain I had a pass-through. Deer kicked, and bounded into the thicket, but didn’t hear him go far. I have a long history of being terrible at tracking. Being somewhat color blind sucks. Long story short, spent two hours looking. No bolt. No blood. No deer. It was as if the deer and shot never happened. Went as far into the briars as I could, in multiple spots. A picture below shows what I was up against. Left the woods defeated, ready to give this crap up. Went back today. Found the bolt within 2 minutes, 5 feet from where I dug up the ground last night. Found the deer within 23 minutes based on texts with my aldeer brethren. Didn’t go but 50 yards and I was within 10 yards of him last night. Never found the first drop of blood. Hate that the meat had spoiled, but glad to at least find him and know I hadn’t lost my mind. Hit him further back than I thought. Guess I won’t be quitting after all!

Very nice, congratulations! I know that’s exciting and a milestone in your hunting career. I’ve been bow hunting for 8 years and haven’t taken a buck yet myself. Our club requires a minimum of 125” for the first buck of the year so it may be a while still.
I don't want to pass quietly into the night. I want to slide in sideways kickin and screamin Life really is awesome ... Soak it up while you can ...
