I saw enough acorns yesterday that deer will be feasting until January
From the time I walked into the wood line I was seeing them everywhere and almost fell down a few times because they were rolling under my feet as I was going downhill

When I need expert advice I tend to talk to myself
The older I get the better I used to be

Ya they a ton here too

Was up on skyline last weekend and couldn't hardly stand up from all the acorns rolling under my feet and the steep mountain side

Same as my place in Marshall Co. Dang deer can just lay down, nap, wake up, roll over and get a belly full, and then go back to sleep!

All I’ve found so far are the huge Mountain Oaks that apparently the deer don’t eat

Killed a doe yesterday that’s as fat as any I’ve killed and she had a rather large fawn she had raised. There’s acorns everywhere this year.

I must be looking at the wrong tree’s cause I haven’t seen any. I’m setting at lowndes wma surrounded by oaks and haven’t heard one hit the ground yet. I reckon I’ll put a few more miles on the boots and see what I can find

I’ve had as many as 14 mature bucks on several cameras until a few days ago. The acorns have completely changed their patterns. I’ve not had but two on camera in about 8-10 days. It’s making hunting extremely difficult. Coupled with the high temps deer are almost exclusively nocturnal here.

Was down there scouting a month ago. Could not find any and have not had any across three counties in different properties. Few water oaks petering out. I don’t understand how Birmingham and up is covered in them and down here they are few and far between.

I found one dropping a few today. But not a ton. Guess I’ll check a different spot next time

I did find one red oak dropping a few and a little bite of water oak. I walk 7 miles. It’s looking like the food plots will be the place to hunt if they come up.

I hunted Upper State SOA in Jackson the past few days - unit 2. Beautiful timber: large white oaks and a ton of other oak species everywhere. Only certain trees were dropping and a lot had been dropping but were all cleaned up. One was dropping huge acorns and you could tell there were critters feeding by all the leaves turned over, empty acorn caps and cracked shells so I got super excited. I climbed a tree downwind of there all thinking what I was gonna do with all my deer meat then it hit me… I didn’t see any deer scat or rubs around there and all that was probably from hogs and squirrels. Sure enough, didn’t see anything that sit, left a cell cam there and a dozen hogs in there vacuuming up the place after midnight.

I’ve never hunted oaks before being almost entirely a pine plantation hunter. But I guess I got a “learning experience” after hunting that place. Gotta verify the DEER sign HA!
