Seems I've taught my cat how to squirrel hunt. About five years ago a tiny emaciated kitten showed up here on a bitterly cold winter day. It hid under the deck, took a while but now he's my back porch buddy. He's still 2/3 wild. His name is Mauser. He likes to be pet but never attempt to pick him up. He's a stone cold killer, disappears for days. He caught on that when I walk out with a gun that its dinner time. He loves fresh squirrel. When the squirrel drops from the tree he's on it. Few minutes ago I heard one barking behind the house, got my Ruger 10-22 out of the truck, walked out to the woods, Mauser under my feet, but when the squirrel saw me it shut up. I couldn't find him.

So Mauser walks out and started circling around, watching me the whole time and of course the squirrel started chattering at him. Mauser, still watching me, kept circling around the tree - this is about 20 yards from me, until I found the critter and shot him. Mauser was on him before he stopped bouncing.

I got the 10-22 a couple of weeks back, 1980 mfg, still new in box, added sling and scope (thanks again Jmudler)

I've always been a dog person, but inherited a cat when my mom died. Completely different animal. Kinda admire them a little. Very good hunters and killers. For instance, dog runs to door acting like a fool and comes out like a greyhound usually running around like an idiot. The cat walks to the door, and peers out taking everything in. Slinks out like a ninja staying as hidden as possible. Usually picks a spot to surveil the surrounding before disappearing completely.

I had a cat growing up that would fetch squirrels when shot with a pellet rifle.

A couple years ago I picked up a cat from Gomer that looks just like that. If we walk around the neighborhood he goes too. If I take my son to the empty lot down the street to throw ball he goes to and lays in the grass and watches. Not as loyal as a good dog but a good pet for sure and my boys are crazy about that thing.

Thats really cool. I once had a cat like that. He would follow me wherever I was doing stuff and catch any critter that I happened to turn up on.

The funny part is that cat is probably telling his friends “you’ll never believe this, but I taught this fellow up the road how to squirrel hunt”

Haha

Wonder if I could leash train him? Put him on a long line leash and take him hunting. As wild as he is that wouldn't turn out too well. But come to think of it pussy has had me on a leash most of my life and I got used to it, might work.

I wonder if you could make a tracking cat out of him. Seems plausible.

That’s awesome! I found a kitten in the road about a year ago and now that cat will follow my wife everywhere she goes around the farm. It will run beside her for hundreds of yards it’s funny to watch
