Went back to sit my favorite food plot this afternoon, plan was to try to whack a doe with my bow but I took the rifle too just in case. Had doe come out around 4:30 or so and she was almost in bow range when a tree fell close to the plot and ran her off. She ended up coming back out again later but never got in bow range again.

Around 5:15 or so I heard a buck up in the woods working a scrape, I could hear him pawing leaves and working branches. Knowing he may keep going down the fire break he was on (that I couldn’t see) and that light was fading fast I decided to throw a Hail Mary at him. I pulled out my grunt tube and gave him a couple good loud grunts then cupped my hand and snort wheezed at him. Next thing I know he was at the edge of the plot behind a limb where I couldn’t shoot. He worked a scrape there for a second and then came straight down the middle of the field at a brisk pace with his ears pinned back. I finally stopped him at about 70yds, lined up on his shoulder, and CLICK no bang. He was looking my way when I racked the bolt (ejecting a live round that didn’t go off) but lucky didn’t know what was going on. I put it on his shoulder again and this time got the bang I wanted. He took off out of the top edge of the field carrying his front leg. Barely made it 15yds in the woods.

Last time we had him on camera was back in early October.

Great buck and cool story. Any idea why the round failed?

Not sure, I looked for it when I got down but all I found was my brass from the second shot. I’ll probably go try to find it tomorrow afternoon. I know it was a live round though because a zeroed the rifle last week dropping one round in at a time then opened it up, loaded it, and haven’t shot it since.
