Too much good meat on the neck for me to mess it up. That's the point of hunting and killing an animal is for the meat right? Behind the shoulder doesn't mess any meat up Yeah not exactly.you cut out shoulders and back strap neither come close to center of neck.there is no meat in neck anyone keeps Huh? Neck roasts are just about my favorite thing off a deer

If you are a good enough shooter to hit the vitals, you should be a good enough shooter to also hit neck. They will drop in their tracks, and you won't have to worry about them running onto adjoining properties. Be prepared to put another bullet in the deer, because sometimes you may have just stunned them and knocked them out. I have a fire lane that i can see 200 yards, and do not want him running onto neighbor's property..
Is it Hunting Season Yet?

Never lost a deer by neck shooting them Made this shot with rifles ranging from 22-250 up 300WM Best shot to take if you don’t like tracking wounded deer
When I need expert advice I tend to talk to myself The older I get the better I used to be

Used to hunt with an old black man and if he needed a doe for meat he would shoot it in the head. Bucks he always shot behind the shoulder.
Now I would not advise anyone to do that, and I have never attempted it myself. But that’s what he always did so he could get as much meat as possible. I shot a small 6 point between the eyes when I was 20 or so (40 years ago) just showing I could do it. I swore after that I would never do it again on purpose. Deer deserve better.

Have taken many risky shots in last 35yrs of hunting.dont care what y'all think.growing up hunting public land you take what deer give you.different ball game sitting in woods with no shooting house or tree stands most times. Have shot 4-5 deer in neck all drop.none on purpose just where deer stopped after grunting and what I had. No special place they fold up.zero back strap or shoulder damage.even y'all that know how to cut all the way up neck getting out that neck meat with your back strap. Zero meat loss I don't care how you shoot a deer myself I just stated a IMO on what is the less riskiest shot. I have shot them ever way you could possible think of . But if I have the choice I'm shooting lung/heart ever time ..

My dad used to only let me shoot does if I shot them in the head, so that is what I did. Running head shots on squirrels is good training.

Neck roast is the best cut behind inner loins. I have 3 in the freezer. Ate one last week. I avoid neck shots for this very reason. Way more meat on neck than a shoulder.
You keep it on the bone or do you debone the neck and just throw the mean in a crock pot?
