Tracking is very fun. It’s also a skill that takes experience. I personally love tracking them. I’ve been on a few tracks this year that were several hundred yards long, and got recoveries. There are definitely times a dog is needed though. I always give the deer patience and attempt the track first, unless I have reason to believe a dog is the correct choice to make.

I’ve called a dog one time on a bow shot. My mistake by calling it too early. Jumped the deer and never found him.

The answer is yes. Greenfield sitting and baiting has also made folks unable to read deer sign.

I had a high fence call me a week or two ago right after dark. A storm front was on the way and they only had a few specks of blood on one they thought they had smoked. Some tip money for a tracker I’m guessing aint chit for them so they called me out to find it before the rain set in…..It took us about a minute to run to it. Everyone was happy.

If a person wants to call in a dog that’s their prerogative regardless of anyone else’s opinion about whether or not it was needed.

But you are answering the question almost every time you make a post. The question wasnt "is dog tracking ok?".

Why not?.....Dogs are a tool like any other you’re carrying…..It’s like saying that flashlights are nice but should only be used as a last resort….. How about y’all don’t pour that corn pile out or hang that camera unless you cant kill one any other way…..

I’ll never track another deer in my life that I shoot as long as I have a dog…..Why would I??.....To prove something to the rest of the world that doesn’t matter??.....Does it make sense to have 4-5 hunters tromp around the woods for 2-3 hrs looking for something a dog could find in 10 mintues??

Your painting with a wide brush. Why would I go through the effort of finding a tracker. Making him stop what hes doing, load his stuff up and drive all they way to me when I'm following a blood trail that looks like someone poured out of a 5 gallon bucket? My car will go 100mph. Doesnt mean I need to go that fast ,but I know its avaliable if needed.

I would personally only call a dog as a last resort. I’m certainly not paying somebody $200 to find a deer that could have found myself had I put in a little effort. However I’m not gonna tell anybody how to spend their own money.

With that being said, tracking dogs are amazing and a great resource for folks.

Y'all do what you want but that makes no sense to me.....If you want an experienced dog that can find one that actually needs finding then its best to get them as much experience as possible.....Who cares about the male pride aspect of it

Because a dog is a specialty tool. My dog will be used only when needed to be used. Not used because people are to lazy to look for a deer they shot. I understand there is a lot of money to be made by trackers and most trackers want hunters to use their dogs. It’s not about pride. It’s about finding your own deer is part of the hunt. In my opinion if your to lazy to try to find the animal you shot, then you should not be around me or my dog. As I said above, she is only a last resort. My dog my rules!!!

Exactly!!! Tracking dogs are probably one of the best tools ever to come to deer hunting. Lots of deer that would be never found are now found. Is Raven in the same category as CNC’s dog or other sure nuff tracking dogs? Heck no!! And I’ll never claim her to be. However the several times we needed her, she found everyone of them. I also agree that if someone wants to call a dog and pay a tracker to find their deer, that’s not my business. I just like looking for them myself and will be the first one to help my guys track one.

If you knock the toofs out of one you might need more than a dog dawg.

You have no clue how I hunt. Now you’re just pulling things out your ass!!! You must be a petty lonely little man. Because I don’t want people who are to lazy to look for their own deer around me. I hardly ever hunt a shooting house and I do occasionally hunt a corn pile because there is one in that particular area I want to hunt. I do not own a buggy but I do take my truck or 4 wheeler from the camp to the area I’m hunting. Not that I need to explain anything to you but we have a pretty large area and it would be pretty silly to walk the 3-4 miles to get to the other end of our main property or the 5 miles to our other property. So yes I do ride to go hunt. All of our stands have designated parking spots and we walk in from them. An I still work up the ground to plant food plots because I don’t mind putting in the extra work to make sure I get what I feel is the best chance for the plots to grow.

This right here. If folks would just assess the shot , wait , give the deer time , someone with tracking skills would find most of them.

Most of the tracks I go on have been stomped to death by the hunters. It takes awhile to straighten it all out unless the deer is hurt real bad then they seem to blow through it. I do hate pulling up to a track and going 100 to 150 yards and walking up on a dead deer and following blood most of the way. I don't get very many of those. More often than not the deer is alive and either needs bayed or ran/tracked long enough to figure out they aren't hurt. I've seen people push deer for miles tracking them and the deer just stays ahead of them. I really don't understand why people do that. Either back out and give it time or call some dogs in. Alot of these are leg shots, liver or guts.

I hav tracked my own for years

But glad i hav seen some dogs work - awesome experience. One of the reasons i hav done it - to not push deer where i could not find. My first track was With Art Powers a few years ago. The deer had probably ran 350 yards - i would hav never found. He did and buck which was a mature 6 was still alive. The other 2 tracks were short. I did it out of respect for the deer - to not push it or screw it up. Awesome - awesome experience. In each track - none took over 10-12 minutes. But Art is awesome. On 1/1/24 - he had already been on 55 tracks this year. 2 years ago on jan 17 he had already been on 77
Years ago in gaston burg i tracked one my son shot about 450 yards w almost no blood and no help. Dogs would hav been more fun though and i just want to find dang deer out of respect for dang deer w out as little screw up as possible so i call the dang dog.😀

I Bet CNC is pretty awesome at it too and i will say that even though he is a Roll Tider 😀
