Not sure what a healthy number is for a pond but thinning the herd seems like a reasonable approach. I removed around 40-50 turtles over a few days in my 5 acre pond and the remaining seem to be doing just fine several years later. When I first purchased our property there were turtle heads popping up all over the pond.
