The most scared I can remember being in the woods was the fall after I got out of the service. During squirrel season I packed into the back side of the lake on Giles Island. I knew that snakes where bad in that area so I wrapped up my gear in a piece of paper mill felt that I was going to make into a hammock, to get off the ground. Now there was a rumor(actually it was a fact) that there was a "crazy" man living on the island whose wife had disappeared and he was having children with his daughter.
After I got my camp set up I killed a couple of squirrels and after I had cleaned them I made a pot of coffee and got me a cup. By now it was pitch black dark. I had stood my double barreled 16 gauge against a tree beside my head light which was on the opposite side of the fire from where I was crouched. About half way through the cup of coffee, all hell broke loose right behind me, I mean right on me. There was loud rustling in the dry leaves, limbs breaking, sounded like a damn bull moose busting in on me. I threw the coffee down and dove across the fire, doing a first class offensive roll as I grabbed the shot gun in one hand and the light in the other. I knew that crazy man was fixing to land on my back. I threw the light on the noise just as I started to pull the trigger and it was a damn armadillo rooting around in a rotten pile of brush. It took my heart at least 15 minutes to get back to a relatively normal rate.

Ya'll have some good ones, i almost feel left out. Never really had anything scary happen in the woods that i can remember, now the old 1800s camp house is a whole nother story.

I've got two about being scared of getting hurt, not spooky stuff. The first was when I was hunting out of an elevated shoot house in a hardwood bottom that overlooked a small food plot about 100 yards away. About an hour before dark I saw three raccoons making their way across the food plot straight towards me in that shoot house. I figured out real quick why there were so many leaves and straw and stuff in the shoot house floor when I climbed in. Yep, those three coons had made woomera self a home in that shoot house and now I was an intruder in their eyes. Long story short, two of them tried getting there with me, after I had already tried to shoo them away. To say they were pissed would be an understatement. I shot one just as he was coming in the window. Shot the second one as he was climbing one of the shoot house legs. I shot the third one while he just stood there looking at his dead buddies. I figured I might not make three good shots so I better take advantage of his standing still. To this day, I shoot every coon I can if it doesn't mess up my hunting.

My second time of being afraid of getting hurt was when I took a short cut through the woods knowing I'd have to cross a small creek. Apparently it had been longer than I thought since the last time I'd been that way because the creek had grown over the years. While standing at the edge pondering what to do, the edge gave away sending me into about 5' of water, with a tree stand strapped to my back. Luck went from bad to worse because I ended up under water on my back with my legs above my head and the tree stand holding me down. All I can say is the good Lord was with me that day because I don't even know, nor remember, how I got free of the tree stand but I did. I got my legs back under me and stood up. I retrieved my stand and pushed it all up on the bank then climbed out and laid on my back on the bank for what seemed like hours, (probably only 10 minutes) just catching my breath and thanking God. I gathered my stuff and went on hunting, soaking wet.

I'll try to keep it short.18 years ago I had this bright idea to tramp about 150 yards into the swamp at our club.So I waded through mud and muck and I climbed a tree.I knew exactly who was down there at the time.Only my2 cousins and me.He is a chicken chit so I know he had nothing to do with this.Anyway right at dark behind me in the swamp I hear a voice calling my name.I didnt answer so it calls my name again and this time it says Troy I know your out here.I still didnt answer. It never called my name again.I was so scared that I didnt come down out of the tree until my cousin and his brother came looking for me way long after it got dark.18 YEARS later I am still in that club and I have never gotten even close to that part of our land. Some of you may know the swamp I am talking about. It is in the corner where hwy 219 and 183 meet in perry county.

I have two stories, both involve me, my brother and coyotes.

The first one was in Georgianna sitting on a plot, I had a good buck come out and i was watching him through the binos trying to count points. About that time 2 coyotes came out chasing the buck. I was able to shoot one of them in the neck, but it ran off the plot. My brother showed up to see what I had shot, so we went to find the coyote to throw it in the gut pile. We were in some thick planted pines following blood but we heard something walking around us. My brother throws his stream light up and it was the coyote I had shot with a hole in his neck. (one reason I am glad I always carry a pistol hunting)

Next was in Luverne, I was bow hunting in a bottom with a few white oaks dropping. Squirrels were everywhere up in one of the trees and a huge bobcat came sneaking in and climbed the white oak next to me chasing squirrels. As soon as its feet hit the ground I smoked him. Waited until dark and my brother met me at the truck, we went in and started trailing the cat. we crossed a creek with a steep embankment on the otherside and as soon as we topped the embankment a pack of coyotes were already eating on the bobcat 10 yards from us. That was the fastest 1/4 mile I have ever run.

A couple of years ago I was hunting a property here by the house and I had an elderly gentleman in overalls enter the end of the field I was hunting. He had a small dog with him and he waved at me as he walked out of the field. I was aggravated that he walked in here where I was thinking deer would be entering. I got down a little early that evening and walked to the end of the field he came out in. There was not a track in the field where they had walked. I didn't think much about that until I talked to the landowner and told him someone was trespassing on the land. After I described the man, he told me it sounded like his daddy. Trouble was his dad had passed away many years before. He always walked in the evenings and his little dog would go with him. His dog was the same as the dog I saw with the man. Every time I hunt there now, I am as jumpy as a crackhead. Place just unnerves me after seeing them. I don't know what I saw, but I know it left a lasting impression on me. I never was spooked in the woods until this happened. An acorn can hit the ground and I will jump like a rocket went off.

My uncle always talked about a booger that lived in soapstone creek that crosses 80 south of selma. I heard this year in and year out. Well I finally get to bowhunt by myself and I think by plan, they throw me out on a small part of the lease that has soapstone split it in half.....I didn't even think about this booger till abt 30 min before dark when I realized I'm going to have to leave the " safety of the trees". Well then I start listening real hard and I swear I could make out foot steps in the creek and I was sitting next to( running water 40 yards from the field) so I convince myself I HAVE to get away from this thing walking towards me in the creek so I take off running back towards where my dad will pick me up........when he gets done hunting and drives 15 min to where I was.......sitting on the side of a desolate dirt road......now I'm starting to think I've jumped out of the pot and into the pan. Now I start hearing multiple things walking in the woods around me!!!! I'm seriously dorking out at this moment. Dad finally gets there and I tell the story and asks what were the multiple things stalking me by the road, I respond a pack of coyotes. In my haste to get in the truck I left my quiver, went back to get it the next day and there were 4 puppies abt the size of a shoe right where my quiver was........ He looked at me and said " that's the pack of coyotes I guess???

I never heard the story about the hanging but I had forgotten about another scary moment we had.I will let Bamabart tell it if he will.Mainly because it happened to him.Whatever this thing was it hung around on the hillside overlooking that same swamp. It scared the dookey out of a few people that year but I remember very well that one evening it Whiteyed Bart.lol.He was stillpumped when I got back to the clubhouse. There aint enough gold in ELDarado to make me ever go back to that swamp in the evening.I know that I was in the presence of something evil that evening

My Brother was a GW in Perry Co back in the 80's and early 90's. That swamp is for sure haunted. The typical Perry Co night hunters even steer clear of it. No way in the world I'd go in there when the suns not shining!
