Did a search of the pilots name and found this German website….its all in German, but it lists his plane’s s/n:42-51542 and lists my uncle as the Bombardier in the crew section. The comments translate to: “The plane was hit over the target of Flak and immediately went up in flames. Parts broke off from the machine and threatened to fall on other bombers in the formation“Also says the Co-pilot, Navigator and 2 of the Gunners were killed. Notes say the copilot was injured and trapped in the cockpit, pilot tried to get him out but couldn’t. https://daacda.acdh.oeaw.ac.at/entities/bombers/detail/550

Absolutely fascinating. That’s the kind of stuff we watch on the TV and movie screen, those boys were living it. God bless every one of them.

This is awesome. I would try to figure out the nose art on the bomber and do something with that. Maybe put that on your bass boat or something.
Cool as hell. Glad you asked this here.

So, I’ve decided the plane I previously posted is not his, but a different one that the same pilot flew previously. The one pictured has a different s/n and his plane appears to have been OD green while that one is unpainted. Also his MACR report above lists the planes nickname as “none”. It looks like the one pictured above was the original “Herk’s Jerks” but was lost on July 19, 1944. It looks like the pilot was then assigned to a different unit (my uncle’s) and given a new plane. The new plane was apparently never officially named, but some reports still refer to it by the same name as the previous plane.
