What kind of price can I expect to pay to have my current water tank (gas) switched out for a tankless water heater? I don’t know if it matters or not but it’s in the garage on an interior wall, if it makes a difference. Obviously, the gas line and vent for the current tank are already there. For those that have them, is there one brand that stands out over the others? Pros/cons?

I put my noritz on the outside wall. Been a good one for the last 11 years. Just developed an error code. Should be an easy fix for me. I would buy another without blinking an eye

Shout out to noritz. Called them and they walked me step by step to diagnose my problem. The heat exchanger developed a leak. It was NOT under warranty but they are going to send me a new one anyway free of charge. Its about 500 if i had to buy it. Outstanding customer support.

They are NOT maintenance free. Heating water releases sediment and minerals. In a standard water heater they collect in the bottom and are supposed to be flushed regularly. The condition is made worse in hard water areas. Tankless water heaters have nowhere for the sediment to collect. It heats faster and releases more sediment in my opinion. That sediment will collect all through the home where hot water is flowed. Sinks, Tubs, Showers and don't forget the dishwasher and washing machines. Those screens need to be cleaned periodically. I would get a coffee cup of sediment a month. Since the sediment has nowhere to collect, it tends to hang around the heater core on tankless. And will damage them. They need to be flushed properly ( I used vinegar) twice a year to prevent the core from being damaged. Lots of videos. I do NOT use chemicals to clean it. Vinegar works just fine.

Supposedly thats too much flushing. They recommend once every 2 years. If water is that bad they recommend a filter . Water hardness test is in order also . I never flushed mine in 11 years. Maybe thats why the heat exchanger is leaking. I dont know

Never flushed it. New core, never ruptured in the next 8 years we were at that home. I flushed it every 6 months. Probably did need a filtration system. If I ever build again, I'll have both.
