There’s only certain counties these cicadas live in AL. It’s far northeast, some east central and southeast. They pick back up in parts of MS, but are absent from a lot of AL. They’re different than the annual green cicada we see every year. I don’t think we will see any in most of west and NW AL. they on the tallapoosa river ( elmore /macon ) north of shorter dog track i . last time they came it was damn loud and loading down with them been years back when i was working on a cotton farm . im about 8 or 10 miles north from the river as a crow flies . never seen the smalls ones here im 64

Growing up in the 60's/70's we called them June Bugs. They would shed there outer shell and it would be stuck on pine tree bark mostly....looked like a pork skin! You called cicadas June Bugs? They here somewhat ever year…they was a hatch…probly 99 or 2000 there abouts…an there was thousands of them everywhere…ever tree in our yard had their husks by the hundreds on the trunks…they blanketed the ground an you couldnt walk without crunchin them. Aint seen a one here jn marshall county yet. As for what we called them…red eyed an green eyed locusts…i know they aint a locust..but thats what everbody i ever knowed called them my whole life…i never heard of a cicada til i was like 15…an that come from our yankee neighbor.. pawpaw called a mayfly(willowfly) a june fly an a july fly on acount of the hatches…we freezed them thangs by the ziplock bag full…whoop a bloogal bed down. Bass will destroy cicadas that land on the water…an their carcass makes a nifty homemade topwater bait

They are kinda patchy around here. Just the regular yearly kind immediately around my house but just a mile away will make you consider putting in your earplugs.

It’s amazing how loud they are right now.

The tree line behind the house makes a perpetual high pitch buzz sound. Luckily it's far enough away to just be noticed and not overwhelming. Whatever eats them things should be so fat it can't move anymore.

There are different species of cicadas, and different broods (cohorts within a species) that emerge at different times. Every county has the annual cicada we all see and hear every year. They’re dark green/black with greenish yellow eyes. The massive brood occurring this year is a completely different species that emerges in cycles, or broods, every 13 years. Here is a map of the different broods of 13 and 17 year cicadas in North America. Those counties in AL in blue are the counties that should see this brood this year.
