Wanting to learn how to use a trumpet yelper, does anybody have any suggestions on buying a 1st call. Not wanting a low end but have seen some high dollar customs out there.

Thanks

What type of material is yours made of, I reached out to misfire calls and he gave me some ideas on wood/acrylic and different types of mouth piece materials.

Get a wingbone and learn to use it. It’ll make a trumpet a piece of cake. Wingbones can be free. Not trying to derail your post but I thought it might be good advice.

Thanks for the advice, now wishing tomorrow wasn’t the last day of season.

When I looked into trumpets a couple of years ago they were higher than giraffe's c00che.

BustinBeards made me a sweet cane caller that makes some awesome clucks and if you practice yelps good as well.

I've got a "Tom Turpin" trumpet I've had for about 50 years. I bought it because what few Turkey Hunters around back then used a Lynch Box,home-made diaphragm or Lynch slate call.....none had a trumpet. I figured the Turkeys had never heard the sound it makes and I might have s little better luck......I was right!! Called many in with that Trumpet.....believe I paid $7.00 for it.

I appreciate the kind words on the cane yelper Rod.

I make some cane yelpers and they do a pretty fine job of making hens pissed off.

Woodley, Give William Lester a look. He makes a fine yelper that is easy to run and won’t break the bank.

I was in the same boat a few years ago and bought a william lester call its not too hard to run, but ive never put enough practive into to make it one of my hunting calls. Either way he is a one man show and makes a cool call that i think will be a collectors items one day down the road.

I run a handmade wingbone and a V.O. Johnson Quill call. I put a lip stopper on the Johnson, but the wingbone I run without one. I'm in the market for a good one too, but spending that type money makes me cringe.

I killed a bird with your cane yelper last year pal. Cutting on that thing pisses hens off something awful lol

Just a little advice, this is an addictive habit to pick up. Ive bought 3 trumpets and have a 4th being made now by William Lester. Ive picked up a couple of wing bones and cane calls also. This is getting expensive🤣

Here are a couple of trumpets I’ve picked up and a wingbone I made(please excuse the bad artwork). I also have a Mossy Oak bottomland acrylic call coming from William Lester.

Rolfe Hollow calls Ken Mullins

Misfire calls Lee Chadwick (made lanyard)

I have one of those too, and mine is also about 50 years old. I'm sure it was under $10, and it was my second one. I carried the first around for several years and eventually damaged the lip, so I bought another one. It's easy to learn to make a good cluck with it, but takes a lot of practice to yelp well.

A trumpet moves a lot of air and that makes it the most difficult of this style of call. The cane call is much easier to learn to run. I would start with a Bustinbeards cane call and try a trumpet after getting good with it.

They are not really that bad to learn, they do take a lot of practice to get consistant clucks and yelps. There are a lot ogoid videos on youtube. Learning to control the air volume and flow is the hard part. I am still learning to run mine, I practice daily wife and neighbors think im crazy.

If you practice daily and feel like you are still learning, then that meets my definition of "hard." smile

I've been in the same place you describe of practice every day with a trumpet. Now I get my cane call out the week before the season and run it a few times and I'm ready. Maybe that's partly because I practiced a lot with a trumpet before ever getting a cane call.

Got a special package today, my Lester call came in. This call has a special meaning to it. I ordered the call after talking with Bill, a couple of weeks later he said it was on the way. The package arrived and it was the wrong call plus an extra one, I reached out to him and sent them back. He had gotten 2 labels mixed up. He sent me an email saying that mine had been resent and that there was a special surprise in the package. That surprise was that the serial # on the call was #5000. On a hand written letterhead he thanked me for returning his calls and said that he had been saving #5000 in a drawer for a special call, and my act of honesty deserved that number. To say I was blown away is an understatement. This call will always hold a special place in my vest.
Bill is a true gentleman and a true asset to call makers.

Good people appreciate honesty.
Your doing the right thing was rewarded in a truly special way that he probably felt would mean something to you.

Congrats! Hope you kill a good one with it.
