Thanks for the information I’ve said for several years now that with the fast growing hog population they would soon be the #1 turkey nest predator According to their studies pigs aren't really messing up nests but rather just running turkeys out of the area.....They said turkeys were exhibiting an avoidance behavior to areas with pigs They quoted a study from 2020 that said probability of a nest being predated by a wild pig was 30%. That's pretty hefty.

Pigs love thick understory especially stuff like heavy grass stands…..The places they like to be are probably some of the more likely turkey nesting spots.

I'm pretty sure its still an evolving issue too that still has 10-20 years of further growth ahead of us.....I dont think the landscape as a whole is nearly maxed out yet.....

They just need to go on and poison the sobs and be done with it. Something tells me that maybe there’s folks that don’t want them gone saying it will kill a few tweety birds and rare salamanders. Yep. I hope they approve LSU's poison so we can kill every last one of them.

Actually, there isn't a lot of data showing that pigs are heavy predators of turkey nests. We know they predate them, but the frequency with which they do is likely overblown. There are studies on pig stomachs showing turkey eggshells, but those could just as easily be scavenged after a nest was predated. And, the studies that have tried to measure nest predation, such as the one we cited from 2020, were conducted with artificial nests. Here are the problems with that study and others like it: (1) they use dead eggs in artificial nests...dead eggs probably smell much more than live eggs, (2) artificial nests are placed by humans, likely in spots that are less than optimal, and (3) there is no turkey tending it that can potentially distract pigs if they come close.
You are going to see a paper come out in the next year (not from Auburn) that really tackles this issue.
