I read an article that said turkey harvest was down 66% in 2023 from 2013. Is that correct that seems unbelievable to me?

There’s lots of variables there that I’m not gonna take the time to look up.
Did they make “educated guesses” back then like Alabama? Have they implemented a “game check” like Alabama and people aren’t reporting? Are they getting swamped with out of staters and sick of it so they are changing the numbers? Or maybe numbers are actually down (probably because of poor habitat and nest predators like Alabama). Lots of things possible and the numbers may not have actually changed…..

Indeed. That % just seemed unreal to me

We have 400 acres on the flint river in upson county Ga, FIL thinned the timber about 6/7 yrs ago and the turkey population has gone to zero. Used to have 8/10 gobblers on the property at all times.
Property has a nice mix of hardwood bottoms, mature pines, open fields.

My job has me on the road 3-4 days a week covering South Alabama, South Ga, Fl.
I saw one hen fly across the road in front of me traveling through Ga. ONE. Saw no birds in the fields this year. That’s a first. I’m always looking in the fields for game. I mentioned that to several Turkey hunters in Georgia and they noticed the same thing.
Very few sightings in South Alabama as well, but at least a few.

GA has a development problem. They’re losing habitat at an alarming rate.

I’m sure they are. Atl is booming. We are going to run into that issue also. Look at Huntsville, trussville, Shelby co, smith lake area, etc etc. South Alabama too. The places I dreamed about living close to the beach that were farmland or inhabited are now subdivisions. Maybe they’re losing it faster than us, but it can’t be that much faster. Or maybe it is??

I noticed some Federal property went from over 60 birds taken in 2023 and dropped down to less than 35 taken for 2024. The accuracy of the numbers is bothering me.
