I’ve been fortunate with my buying or selling on FB.
I ALWAYS review their profile, selling or buying, before responding. You stop a lot of bs doing that.
When selling, it’s always at a Winn Dixie shopping center a couple miles from me. Busy and security cameras. If I’m selling something that requires it to be seen working, I video it working and that’s in the selling post. Craigslist is pretty dead these days.
Unfortunately I don’t know of any other venues to buy or sell except for this forum and a few other groups.

There is a place to rate them and I use it to see what others have said. I also look at their facebook page to see if they look normal. I suspect in larger towns or cities there are more problems and the smaller/more rural areas have less issues.
Never had any issues once I agreed to buy something.

I've had decent luck with buying and selling on MP. I only do local pickup and don't ship. I do look at their profile to get a feel for if they are legit or not, or has hardly any posts on FB. If something is too good to be true on price (like those older sharp looking Tacomas for $1500), you can take the title and search MP and usually find the same pic at other locations........indicating a scam. If one gets a name, it's not hard to find where they live, so be cautious.

I have had buyers tell me they are literally in the way and never show up. Many more buyers state they are interested in an item and want it, then I never hear from them again. So I generally won't hold an item for someone unless we do have a set time to meet. As far as buying, I found a 4 wheeler 3 hours away that my friend wanted. Through messages I set up a time to meet him the next day when he got home from work at a reduced price that he offered. He messaged me later that evening saying that he was selling it to someone else at full price in the morning. Really passed me off. According to pictures it was worth full price and I would have paid it.

Well the original lady I had been in contact with must have figured out no one rushing in to buy the item and sent me a message that she’d be happy to hold it now and meet up when we agreed. I told her I wasn’t interested now.

I buy and sell a lot on Marketplace. It's bigger items. Boats, campers, and vehicles. I won't do yard sale items on Marketplace. I have rule I pay on all my ads. No holds without a nonrefundable deposit. First come, first serve, but I tell them to call or message before they leave. I'll never sell something if someone is physically on the road to come get it. Same with going after something. I get the home address, Google view it, and make sure they know I'm leaving. If they seem squirrelly, I don't go. I used to not be that way, but people lie to much. Tell you they will be there at a certain time and never answer again.

I think it's the same whether you are buying or selling stuff on FB. If you are selling stuff, people say they want it, I can come this evening. You save it for them, they don't show up. So I think sellers are gun shy from that and that's why things get sold when people are in route to look at it. If they ghost you while you are still interested, that means they sold it to someone else. If I sell something on there I try to let the person know I'm not holding it at all and the first one that shows up with the money gets it. I try to be very clear about that.

Most people get pissed about MP deals because they don’t get what they want when they want it.
I’ve never had someone that bought something from me on MP complain, it’s the ones that didn’t that whine.
I’ve been ghosted and lied to my fair share of times but it’s the best network going at this time.

My parents were huge dealers most of my life so I grew up in hundreds of auctions, auctions houses, flea markets, car auctions. This was before the Internet killed everything like that. They also owned different businesses. From carpet cleaning to flipping cars, they did it. So I saw a few common traits in people when you're dealing with the public. There's a mind game to buying or selling. Some people call it art.

Rule number one, never haggle on price until you arrive in person face to face. Dont even mention it because it kills the sellers energy dealing with you and they will gladly let someone else see it before you do.

#2 If you want the item, you better drop everything and run to get it because most people ain't gonna hold it until you're actually driving to meet them. Even then, don't be surprised if it's gone. That's why it's imperative that you don't piss the seller off with haggling over the phone.

#3 When selling something, never leave your house because when you do, the buyer knows they have you over the barrel at that point.

Just say, can I come look at it right now, or whenever you're ready to show it. That usually puts you ahead of the others.
And always have cash and a gun hidden. And let someone know where your going and send the profile to them if it's thousands of dollars.

People are printing fake car titles these days so you have to be careful.

I had a guy cuss me for not screwing over a person I had already made a deal with. I told him if original deal fell through I would let him know. He then wanted to run that mouth cause I was going to keep my word with the 1st person.

I’ve been fortunate on MP. I bought some seats for my truck but couldn’t pick them up until the next day. The guy held them even though he had 5 people try to buy them that could come that day.

Wife wanted to get a China cabinet for our daughter-in-law. She found one on market place, got the address and off the 3 of us went with my utility trailer behind my truck. The seller had said the cabinet was really heavy and suggested it would be easier to load on one. The GPS took us out in the boonies and down a curvy dirt road with no houses in sight. We went around a curve and there was a big tree across the road. Immediately my hackles went up thinking it may be a set-up. I told the ladies to lock their doors and I made sure I had one in the chamber and a spare mag handy. Fortunately the situation was pure coincidence and when we called the folks back they told us an alternate route and now my DIL has the cabinet in her dining room. This time worked out great . I'm always aware of the current situation when I go to buy or have someone coming to buy.

I have had the same experience minus vehicles. There are so many fake listings it is becoming hard to search through the legit ones for sale. Every time now I go through and search the persons friends and pictures to see if I cN begin to trust a listing.

I sure as heck am not doing a couple of those. I never meet up at my house unless I have mutual friends with the person or some oyher connection. And I alway do the price before the meeting is set. I guess I am not nice. But, if we agree on a price and the oerson tries to change it the deal is off. I'd rather take it to the junkyard than deal with somebody that goes back on the original deal.

Try selling, you get just as many idiots. My wife listed 8 2016 Toyota steel factory wheels and tires. And she starts asking me. This person wants to know if the fit a Toyota Corolla. What’s the lug pattern. It’s not worth it, most times I’d just as soon trash it. She placed an old tiller and stuff on there free one time. It worse with the word free

I think once you acclimate to the Marketplace stupidry and learn how to pick out the weeds it gets easier. The morons usually show themselves pretty quick when you have a trained eye. It can be a PIA no doubt though. You have to take the good with the bad.

If you have to meet up anywhere besides their house it’s usually a shady deal or they are the no show type. I don’t understand it because it’s easier to get robbed at a spot and anyone can look up your address anyways.

It has nothing to do with market place. It haas everything to do with people. I've bought sold stuff no problem, land, cars, bathrooms sinks, trolling motors, dogs, ect.. I ALWAYS google their marketplace and Facebook profile first and eliminate them right away if I don't like something about them. This eliminates at lot of stuff but also a lot of problems.
