If i knew how to post a vid i would. Its been a long time since ive heard one bark. Had to get up n walk around to see if someone was screwing with me.

It’s always a thrill for me to hear or see one too. I wish they could make a comeback but it sounds like those days are over unfortunately.

I know where there are a few coveys in Macon county. But in the winter they'll usually be in very thick cover and you hear them when they flush but may only get a glimpse of one or two much less an open shot.

We had a lot of storm damage in 2020 and had to cut a lot of timber and about that time I started hammering the coons and other predators to help the turkeys. I wasn’t even thinking about quail but man we have them everywhere and on every one of our pieces of property. From now thru early fall I literally see a couple coveys a day when I’m over there. At the end of turkey season I saw 2 sitting on nests beside the road. I have one covey in the yard at the camp that is over 20 birds. Now when the leaves start falling they disappear, must get back in the planted pines.

ya know, now that i think about it, they disappeared about the time we had the dipause(sp?) phase of the boll weevil eradication program. If i remember right, every acre was sprayed multiple times that year with some really stout pesticides. I mean like nuking every field. Killed everything. They did it in areas, which would explain why they just disappeared up here overnight.

The harder I practice, the luckier I get.

Had a covey of 12 last year within 5 steps of the shooting house in Marion county. This was basically Sam Murphy mgmt area were we have a lease. Game warden pulled up and ran them off. He saw me parked on the line to our private. He said he had seen a couple coveys there. It was really cool to see and listen to them feed. I had jumped them going in before daylight. I forgot how bad a busted covey will make your heart stop in the dark. I had not seen a covey like that in many many years.

They were plentiful in Lawrence County when I was growing up in the 80's and they just disappeared. I had a great uncle who was a great bird hunter. He told me the story of the best day he ever had. Said he left walking early morning with his dogs and encountered 3 coveys. Said he had a box of shells with him. He was back home by lunch and had 24 in his bag. He had 2 old brownings, a 12ga, but always toted the sweet 16. I wish he was still around to listen to those old stories. Also wished I could get my hands on one of his old guns.

I haven’t heard one in over two years. I went hunting with a friend in TN the 88 season and the last day of the season we found 13 coveys. Most days were better than that.

Starting to see more and more the last few years around my place in Evergreen. Hoping they are making a comeback. I plant a lot of Egyptian wheat in my dove fields which they seem to love for cover. We also have a lot of early successional habitat with a mix of crop fields and cattle pastures around the general area so I am sure that helps.

Heard one Saturday night. Saw the hen and poults again Saturday morning. I am ready for fall!
