My dog got bit by a moccasin this morning around 8. We took her to the Med Vet Emergency and got her there before 10AM. She is an Extra Small Schnoodle and weighs 10lbs. They have her on anti-venom now and her coagulation level was normal but on High spectrum. The vet thinks she will be OK and Out dog seems alert and aware. What is You guys experience with a dog bitten by a moccasin? I have had beagles when growing up that would stay gone for a couple days hunting and come home snake bit from what awe guessed were moccasin or copperhead bites and they overcame the bite without ever going to the vet. I am hoping Our limitless dog is going to be OK with the anti-venom treatment and with Her being alert and getting Her to vet about as quick as possible, I am positive in my thinking about her condition. On a side note- This happened in Our chain linked fenced in back yard. There is a water oak in my yard and it has a clump of shrub thick stuff growing out the bottom. I got home from vet and started trimming around the tree and I started working on the shrub thick stuff and low and behold there is the juvenile moccasin layer up in a hole area in tree inbehind where the shrub stuff was growing. 2 shots with my .45 ACP and He was dissipated. I am happy I found the culprit right in my backyard. I hate a snake!

I've had a lot of coon hounds bitten, we hunted all summer long so it wasn't rare. we just gave them a shot of antibiotic and that was it. I can't remember one not making it. . I would think a small dog would be a little different. I had a little 10lb fiest get bitten once. She survived and was never bit again. I'm not sure but it was more than likely a copperhead.

my understanding is that while the cottonmouths are fairly likely to bite, the actual venom is not as dangerous as it could be. Of the 3 likely bites, the cottonmouth may be the mildest. Rattlers are generally the worst. My cockers and boykins have all gotten into copperheads, and with one exception, we went the Benadryl/IV hydration route, rather than antivenom. All survived.

I especially hate cottonmouths. Beat the heck out of a small one with a stick around my pond. I’ll kill every venomous snake I see especially if in my yard. Hope your dog gets better soon.
