Wise thinking!


We tried so hard to make things better for our kids that we made them worse. For my grandchildren, I'd like better.

I'd like for them to know about hand-me-down clothes, homemade ice cream, and leftover meatloaf sandwiches.

I hope you learn humility by being humiliated, and honesty by being cheated.

I hope you learn to make your own bed, mow the lawn, and wash the car.

I hope nobody gives you a brand-new car when you turn sixteen.

It would be good if at least once you see puppies being born and your old dog put to sleep.

I hope you get a black eye fighting for something you believe in.

I hope you share a bedroom with your younger sibling. It’s okay to draw a line down the middle, but when they’re scared and want to crawl into bed with you, I hope you let them.

When you want to see a movie and your little sibling wants to tag along, I hope you let them.

I hope you walk uphill to school with your friends in a safe town.

On rainy days, I hope you don’t ask to be dropped off two blocks away so you won’t be seen with your uncool mom.

If you want a slingshot, I hope your dad teaches you how to make one instead of buying it.

I hope you learn to dig in the dirt and read books.

When you learn to use computers, I hope you also learn to do math in your head.

I hope your friends tease you when you have your first crush, and that you learn what ivory soap tastes like when you talk back to your mother.

May you skin your knee climbing a mountain, burn your hand on a stove, and stick your tongue on a frozen flagpole.

I don’t care if you try a beer once, but I hope you don’t like it. And if a friend offers you drugs, I hope you realize they’re not your friend.

I hope you make time to sit on a porch with your grandparents and go fishing with your uncle.

May you feel sorrow at a funeral and joy during the holidays.

I hope your mother punishes you for breaking a neighbor’s window with a baseball, and hugs and kisses you at Christmas when you give her a plaster mold of your hand.

These are the things I wish for you: tough times and disappointment, hard work and happiness. To me, it's the only way to appreciate life.

His "the rest of the story" pops up on my tictoc feed all the time. I usually stop to listen. One very wise man!

Good, sound advice. I recall simpler times when I was a kid riding around w' Mom & his "rest of the story" bit would come on the radio.

Even as an 8yo I liked to listen to him.

Used to love listening to Paul Harvey on AM radio at lunchtime. I miss America.
