It will be a 3 year deal to plant but it might work.

That's a great idea, but I would just do it with Halosulfuron for nutgrass control. I am planning the same thing this fall on several patches, including the one in the picture.

Please educate me on Halosulfuron

I need to know because we have probably 25 acres in pipeline and powerline fields we
can plant that the nut grass has taken over.

I've only used Halosulfuron a few times, but it's the only thing I've found that will kill nutgrass. I believe that there is one other herbicide rated to kill it, but I've forgotten the name and have never used it. It's expensive, and I have never tried to eradicate nutgrass from a field with it. All I've done is to hand spray patches of it within a chufa patch, and it definitely kills it.

The cheapest place I've found for small amounts is actually Amazon. If you try it, please let us know how it does. It takes an ounce per acre.

Empero Nutsedge Killer (1.33 oz) by Atticus (Compare to The Leading Brand) - Halosulfuron-Methyl 75% Turf Herbicide - Kills Nut Grass in Established Lawns, Ornamental Turfgrass, & Landscape Areas https://a.co/d/bUI25uh

If you are going to try a large area, this is a much better buy from Keystone:

Hunterturf on here has a good amount of experience with killing nutsedge so I reached out to him yesterday. His product of choice is prosedge as he uses it nearly daily with his business. If spot spraying use .9 grams mixed in 1-2 gallons of water along with a non-ionic surfactant. If mixing a larger load it's 1.3 oz per acre and add non-ionic surfactant. I plan to follow his advice next spring/early summer to see if I can get my nutgrass problem in check.

Please somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that Sandra, Prosedge, Sedgehammer, and Empero are all Halosulfuron. The Sandea is the only one I've actually used, but I already bought some of the Amazon brand and will apply it soon. I don't know if one is better than the others.

I have not confirmed that Halosulfuron is the active ingredient in all the one you listed but I can confirm it is in Prosedge.

I looked up prosedge but didn’t see chufa listed on the charts.

I don’t think a pre emerge chemical can handle the nut grass I am dealing with. I could
be wrong but I think the minute the pre emerge wears off the nut grass will be 2 feet tall
In 2 weeks

Ive seen chufa still make crops with a late emergence of nut grass though.

It’s pretty frustrating trying to figure it out.

We need to all try something different and figure out what works

I don't think you will find any of those listed as a chufa herbicide; all of them will kill chufas. Halosulfuron is useful in growing chufas only as a way to kill all the nutgrass out of a field in a year when you aren't growing chufas. You probably already understand this, but I gotta admit that I am getting confused by this thread. smile

I don't think it makes any real difference which brand name of Halosulfuron you use or what how that formulation was intended to be used. I think the small 1.3 oz packets are intended for lawns, but they oughta kill nutgrass wherever it is used. But none of them will ever be listed as a chufa herbicide.

I have used several different brand names of Clethodim, but I can't tell any difference in them. I believe that Halosulfuron will be the same way. I could be wrong.

You are right. I got a little side tracked there.

Are you going to disk and let the nut grass come up then spray it this fall?

That's what I was planning, but I am getting behind on my work. We are going to need more rain in order for me to do it.

Yep. I’m going to be at turkey land this weekend spraying green fields. I might hit a
powerline with a disk.

Might as well try.
