Going to give Jap. millet a try this year. Almost an acre that I will plant. I can control the water on and off of it. Lime in Feb. and disked it this past weekend. I was thinking of planting the weekend of July 4th. That will give me 120 plus days for it to mature and start to dry out. Is that too long?

Google says 50 -60 days to mature. Is this for dove or ducks ?

Duck pond, hancock seeds page says 65-90 day lifespan, I wasn't sure how long it needs to dry out.

I would read up a little on planting before i did this. If you can control the water some corn would be wonderful .It will give you food longer if the deer and coons don't eat it. Grain sorghum also lasts longer. Don't get me wrong millet is good i have 600 pounds in the shop to be planted. I have planted 500 pounds of rice but i cant give advice on it because its my first try

I would shoot for something that last longer. Early season, the ducks are going to be keying in on water oaks where I’m at. If you had something persistent into December January I think you could do better. Just my two cents. As for millet it’s about 60 days mature and I would say you might get a month before it’s all fallen off and eat up.

Ducks not only eat the grain, but the vegetation and associated invertebrates. It's not like when a flooded corn field is out of kernels, the ducks leave. The big advantage is cover, and bugs, with grain being less important than you might think.

And Japanese millet doesn't need time to dry down. I planted some this week actually. It can grow well with wet "feet" (roots) and most of the plant can even be underwater and it'll still grow.

I'd consider planting some milo (grain sorghum) alongside it. It does much better in dry conditions.

Before planting time started I bought up over 2000 pounds of seed of all kinds. If you can find Awa seed. Alabama waterfowl association you can get some great deals on corn beans and sometimes grain sorghum. I bought 500 pounds of Japanese millet and that is all I have left. The millet was I think 57 from the coop never lucked up on it on sale. That being said when do y’all plant it?

When.... is always the question since no matter what you are going to plant into the hottest and driest time of the year.

I have had better luck holding water then dropping the water level and broadcasting this directly onto exposed mud just before a rain. It's come up every time. Flood it back with a pump usually in late October never get enough rain to get it right before season.
