My Inlaws home was damaged in the April 2nd tornado that hit here in Colbert County. Their back porch is a concrete slab that was poured over a PVC water line coming off their well. The line is also tied to their sprinkler system for their garden. If they use these lines from the well, water just runs straight out of the broken PVC line that has broken off level with the concrete slab. They currently have these lines turned off and are using the other line to water their garden via a water hose system.

My question is-Is there any type of a plug that will go down into the broken 1/2" PVC pipe that can be glued inside the broken line and then capped to stop the water? The PVC pipe that is broken is broken off level with the concrete slab. I hope this is clear as to what I am asking. I hate to think about boring or breaking the concrete just to cap the line. Im not a plumber and I am looking at options to cap the broken line.

I'm not a plumber either but I would break the concrete enough to put a coupling on it then patch the concrete.

Dig up the water line on the other side of the concrete porch and cut and cap it off? Or put in a tee and reroute around concrete and tie back in near where broken? I'm probably missing something but maybe this helps.

Is there anything that can just fit inside the pipe and allow me to put a cap on the top of it. If this hasn't been invented yet, here is an opportunity for one of us to make a good living with this patent idea. Im thinking-instead of placing a new piece over the OD of the broken pipe, place a new PVC inside the pipe and glue it. So simple in theory but can it be.

What do you mean level with the concrete?

Chip out around the pipe end until you can fit a coupler on it and then reattach to pvc in yard. Then just use concrete patch to repair the chipped out concrete. Shouldn't take that long to do.
You could also just attach a short piece of pvc to coupler and then cap it off if preferred.

I don't understand why you have to use the line that is broken. Can you not run new line/lines bypassing the line under the concrete altogether?

It wouldn't surprise me that once you chipped away the concrete to expose the pvc pipe you will find hairline cracks in the pvc pipe that extend further into the concrete and you will end up removing alot more concrete to get to undamaged pvc pipe that you can cap without leaking. So that being said, I would dig up the line before it goes under the concrete and either cap or just divert around the concrete.

What size pvc? Big enough for a boat drain plug? I have seen this type plug in other sizes. My grandpa used a Jon boat with a corn cob as a plug for several years so surely something will work for the pvc.

Get a glue in 1/2" PVC PLUG.

Why can't you route new pipe around the concrete slab , tying into existing pipe outside the slab, avoiding the slab altogether and future problems ? Sounds like a job for PEX.

Buy a 1/2” street coupling and tie back on to it.

If you could feed the pex through the busted line. Or run a wire through and pull it would be the only way to do what you are wanting. You would have to be awful lucky for that work. The line is probably crushed

As others have said. Find the lines outside the slab and put in a new line bypassing the slab.

The PVC leaves the well and goes under a concrete slab all the way to the broken line. There is only an area of @6" coming from the pump that is not in concrete. The line that is broken is tied in with the line to the garden where he waters his plants. This was poured years ago and the concrete slab surrounds the well and all the pipes under it. To replace a line would require the concrete slab to be busted up to get to the lines, thus the reason I am wanting to cap the line that was broken. It came about 5" out of the concrete and had a spigot on it. It was a terribly designed project to begin with and now that the back porch has been rebuilt, the access to the broken area is hard to get to. When I get this fixed I will get someone to post pics of what works for him. He is 87 and it is all that is on his mind at the present time.
