The owners are the ones writing the checks so they're the ones at risk...they should make what the market allows. Let the players break out and form their own thing and get paid just from ticket sales and any tv revenue they can sell...then they can get all that market money. Or go do something else to make market money. No one is twisting their arms to make em play ball. The owners don't set the salary cap. The salary cap is set by the league to try to make things even. It's communism and it also allows the teams with a smaller market share to make a larger profit margin. It keeps their labor costs lower. The salary cap is there so that the teams that can afford to pay better wages don't always win. Where else does that occur in the business world? Also, who is twisting the owners arm to pay the players? The almighty dollar is. And if you think the players aren't at risk every time they go to work you aren't thinking clearly. One injury could cost them every thing. Much more risk there than the owners. From a monetary standpoint, the owners are accepting a far greater risk than that athlete. Anyone in any business is at risk. For players, their business is their body and that is the asset at risk. Smart ones, with good agents, buy the big injury insurance policies from Lloyds of London, just like any smart business owner would. Cry me a river for these players. They are getting paid to play a game for a living. Current salaries are absolutely ridiculous in all pro sports, entertainment, music, etc. People quit watching or paying for merch and tickets and you'd see it all drop back into the world of reality within 12 months. Instead, people just continue to support it. As far as NIL goes, I pray that the coaches start treating the players exactly like the players are treating the transfer portal. Sign the scholly and if you're not on the field starting in 2 yrs, high on the depth chart, have a couple bad games or whatever, I hope the coaches start telling the players to clean out their lockers mid-season and move on. Scholarships have always been year to year but rarely did coaches not renew a college athlete's scholarship, without cause. The coaches were, and still are, at this point, far more committed to the players, than the players currently are to the schools and coaches. You're not seeing scholarships being yanked left and right but that is exactly what needs to start happening to curb some of this BS that the NCAA has allowed to fester and transpire.
