not many details on it......62yr old woman found dead in the dog pen by neighbor. Article said it was a "large breed" dog and a "family pet" that had never been a problem previously. No other details

She was found inside the dogs pen. Apparently wounds look like the dog did it.

Dog attacked another man who went to check on the lady and the man killed the dog.

I could see her having a heart attack and then the dog trying to eat her. And I wouldn't think it would be uncommon for the dog to try and attack the neighbor when he tried to go in the kennel. I mean I know it's highly likely that the dog killed her but dang it's got to be a pretty vicious dog to do that having never had issues before.

One of our dogs died that shared a pen with another one and the one still alive, whether trying to furiously lick the dead one back to life or intentionally trying to eat it, was definitely making progress toward that end. It was something I was not prepared to see at the time whichever the case.

That said, I could definitely see someone elderly passing away from other causes and the dog doing what is instinctive to them and if attached to the owner being aggressive toward anyone else who approached.

There is always a first time. More often than not, there was a previous time. I've never known a dog owner that admitted the dog was unstable from the start. Every incident is always the "first" incident. Until police reports are filed to prove otherwise.

I’ve never seen a mean mastiff. Daughter has a huge one and he’s afraid of his own shadow. So was his mother, father and brothers. And a very owner oriented breed.

That's what was thinking exactly. Mastiffs are big but not usually territorial or aggressive. Though obviously any dog can be. They are usually a very loyal breed. Not just to the alpha but usually loyal to the entire pack.

A French mastiff is pretty friendly there’s a few other mastiffs I wouldn’t mess with.

A friends French mastiff killed the heck out of his lab. The lab always picked on all other dogs and had to be kept separate. The gal taking care of the dogs left the lab out and it was on. The French mastiff literally shook the lab to death and slung her up a wall. Pretty bloody scene. The lab was a big female that weighed around 75-80 lbs. the French mastiff was female too.

I had that discussion with somebody the other day. "I have never seen my dog snap like that". .... everybody else has...........

Mastiff's are like a lot of other large herding / shepherd dogs and are really laid back most of the time. Right up till they aren't anymore. Google the story about the Great Pyrenees in Georgia named Casper. He was a easy goer until some Coyote's started messing with his sheep. then he went straight Jihad on them. I realize there's difference between predators and people but these dogs still have that wolf instinct in them.

Yep, Casper opened up a can of whoop a$$ on those yotes. LOL.

Dogs, especially dominant males need to know that they aren't the leader of the pack. The lack of that is a recurring issue in our society, but who knows what happened in this incident. I love dogs and am not suggesting anything other than kind treatment for most dogs, but there are those that you don't play with. They instinctively know if you are in charge or not. A large, dominant male dog needs to know that you'll straight up kill it if the situation calls for it.
