Those of you that burn your fields ... how long before opener are you cutting and burning ? Do you disc after burning? Any discernable difference when doing it ?

I disk into thirds. Burn 1 at the end of July, 1 mid August, and last 1 a few days before opening day.

It just exposes all seed and insects on bare dirt where disking or bushhogging would cover it up.

Brandon Clark knows the deal.

After you burn one time and see all of the seed that’s exposed you will do it again.

Definitely burn in sections.

Per my late Daddy: Doves like Charcoal shards. So, a charred seed really gets them going. I've also helped him break an old mirror and scatter that on the field....the reflection gets there attention.

This is a dumb question, but when you say ‘burning’ the fields, are you actually burning the field (with fire) or chemically burning (like with roundup/gly) to kill off everything?

Depends on if it’s mature and dried out enough to burn. I have done both.

Sometimes both. You may have to hit it with roundup to get it dry enough to burn with fire.

I've seen birds come in on fields that are still smoking from being burned. Somebody told me they like to dust their feathers in the ashes, almost like they would treat a birdbath.

I have hit mine with gly if I planted late and needed it to brown so I could burn it. Doves will flock the field after it is burned. I tried to have mine burned at least 3 weeks opener The week before I would run a drag over it and top sow Wheat.
