We have a young possum coming around to scarf our outdoor cat's food.

My first best action cannot be undertaken in a neighborhood, so I'm resorting to a live trap and relocation.

Obviously the cat food is a good possibility for bait inside the trap. What else is a super sure-fire possum attractor?

Tuna? Just a shitload of cat food? Any scent or anything else?

A piece of cantelope works well and won't attract your cat.

Easy to catch. Put a small pile of cat food on the ground and set the live trap on down so the food stays under the treadle.

The cheapest can of wet cat food you can find if other cats are not around to find it first.

Cat food, sardines, etc. but the absolute best is fried chicken. If I get a smart coon, possum or tomcat, the fallback is fried chicken, never fails I

Thanks for the advice, gentlemen. Two possums have been relocated. I figure we may have others, so we'll see.

Canned sardines did the trick. I sure hate to waste good sardines on a friggin' possum, though.

Opossums don't eat ticks like everyone believes. They may pluck a few off themselves but they're not out scooting around hoovering up ticks in the woods. That's a widespread myth.

Do they eat some? Probably. But they most often search for grubs and other preferred foods, and will plow through fruit, vegetables and pet food when they find a source.

Tick research

They and raccoons are turkey- and quail-egg eating sumbitches. The snowballs I've caught have been relocated alive to where there are no turkeys.
