The straight axle Toyota trucks that ended in 1985 are the ones to have after that they had IFS and while not a bid deal for riding the street they were nowhere near as good off-road.
The inevitable jokes notwithstanding, the 4x4's with IFS were just fine unless you were doing serious off-roading like rock climbing are more serious trails. Mine went over and through a lot of stuff it had no business in and even I was never able to get it stuck. I agree, The IFS trucks would go just as well as the straight axle trucks (probably had a little more ground clearance in the front actually). They just weren't as tough. I put a straight axle in mine because I was tired of going through wheel bearings and CV axles. Just pulled the bed off mine and built a nice flat bed. I'll post pics if I can figure it out.

I had an 87 exactly like that. Sure it was tough and great in the woods but rode and drove like crap on the highway. Underpowered to pull a bass boat, no interior space and was too small to make out with a fat chick in with that small bench seat. I had it for 4 years but was too underpowered and small for my needs when I got older and had to tow more. Replaced it with a 92 GMC Sierra 4wd with a 5.7 and that awesome burgundy velour interior, man I loved that truck and put 200,000 miles on it, it was great with zero issues. Wish they still made those, rode like a cadillac too and towed great.

First truck was a custom delux chevy 4x4. Bought it new. Seems like it was around $9000. Had the 305 motor. Hated it 1985 model.

1970 Chevy C10, 327 engine, 3 on the tree. Loved that truck. Now you are REALLY getting into trucks that were easy to work on. No computers or fancy electronics required.

Toyotas are the toughest 4X4. I've prolly owned 25 trucks from '82 -'14 models , including several 4 Runners. IFS / coil rear 4 Runners ride and drive great and if equipped the same will go better than a truck. The weight is distributed better and they aren't as stiff in the rear. Here's an '82 I built , it's a SR5. I think I gave $700 for it . It's not very highly modified , I bobbed the bed , welded the rear end , built the suspension and put a FJ80 big diameter tie rod on it. Built bumpers. It's painted Massey-Ferguson Grey from TSC . Ridin' on P-Buckshots .

I bought a new 87. The first day I got it I put it threw every mudhole in dale county. Toughest truck of all time. This crap today wouldn't take half what we put those yotas through.

I did that the first weekend in my brand new 1990 Nissan Hardbody 4x4. They were great trucks too.
