We use cereal rye in our more sandy plots in Barbour County. Abruzzi Rye is what we use and the deer love it. This. Turkeys love the seed heads as well.

Good God!!! Talk about some uneducated, ignorant food plotters on here!!!! Planting rye grass?!?!? It sure makes you pat yourself on the back and feel good about yourself as a farmer, doesn't it?!?! It sure is purdy and green!!!! "My deer eat it!!" Yep, and a starving Ethiopian will eat just about anything, too!! Yes, deer eat it. No doubt. If you're planting ryegrass, you CAN'T be doing any reading or studying ANY of the reputable food plotting sites or biologists-led sites on the Internet. You HAVE to be ignorant and still pooping in an outhouse or you don't drink Coke because it turns a penny shinny! (Shouldn't drink it anyway because it's not good for you for other reasons.)
I would not plant it for deer. Erosion? YES!! For wildlife, NO!!! It will grow on a bowling ball, but you don't want it in any of your food plots. Hmmmm... there is NOT a reputable wildlife seed company that promotes ryegrass for deer... unless they put profits above education and ethics.
I'm still shaking my head. Go ahead. Blast me!!! I'm laughing at you! Do a little research.

I’ve used it in bare ground cutovers and areas with poor soil with good results. There is better stuff for better ground

A little diplomacy and tact goes a long way. Why not just state your opinion and not degrade others?

Its not the most nutritious but it pulls deer to it. Filled the freezer many years off ryegrass fields. Been planting rye ,oats and wheat lately and they aren't crazy about it here

If it's a kill plot. they will eat it. If you are trying to increase the health of your deer herd, plant something else. Kids will walk past a healthy meal to eat ice cream. But it sucks for them nutritionally.

What would You plant in rock hard ground with no access to equipment that's a Good Alternative to Marshall Rye? We planted ryegrass and arrowleaf clover in a few spots like that. We had equipment but you can only do so much on a chert hill They were formerly loading decks and only place we were allowed to plant an opening. We had a bigger field down in the bottom too
