I have a very used 1886 in 45-90 black powder cartridge that I have shot a couple of time and it is a lot of fun. IT is not a closet queen by any stretch and would have loved to know more about the gun. I do have a Cody Certificate for the rifle.
I am looking for someone that can look over the gun and help me determine if safe to continue to use and how to conserve the condition or if it is past and needs to be hung on a wall.
Looking for someone with Winchester Rifle experience that can honestly asses and let me know the condition.
Any one recommend someone to contact? I am in Tuscaloosa, willing to drive a bit if necessary.
Thanks for the time.

You will have to send that to someone who can X-ray it to see if it has any micro-cracks
A borescope won’t do this

Aside from factory techs I do not know anyone who would have that equipment
Ive had to send a mod7 to Remington for this very thing

Thanks for the info. Might have to follow up with Winchester. So far, all of the Gunsmiths I have talked to have admitted that they are not up on the old Winchesters, and I understand completely.

I’d reach out to Turnbull Restoration, they can also do amazing factory restorations if that’s your thing.

As far as reaching out to Winchester, they’re not the same company anymore, so will likely be of any help. All of the “old Winchester” information and knowledge is with the Cody Firearms Museum, where you got your certificate

I read one time that these old black powder rounds were really accurate at a 1000 yards

I might start out getting involved in black powder matches just to start making connections with guys who are neck deep into the subject already. From there, they may know of qualified people in their world.

I would also look at trying to understand reduced loads and aspects of using them safety. Combined with a qualified inspection, you may could adopt a mindset of “I’ve already proof tested this thing at full load … now I’ll shoot on a limited basis towards minimum loads” in hopes of not propagating existing cracks.
