You most definitely could power everywhere and truthfully that is what more than you would think are doing in the islands anyway. The boats are just more comfortable on certain points of wind with a sail up even f you are motor sailing. Just keep the amount of sail out very small until you are comfortable with the motions and be extremely careful with a wind from any point behind as this in when you can have accidental gybes and break things. That is a lot of boat though and I would be surprised that the outfitters would rent it to someone without sailing experience . I have had several sailboats over the years if you have any questions. Anchoring safely is definitely something you want to study up on if you never have had to rely on an anchor in a storm or want to be able to sleep soundly. Sounds like an awesome vacation! Thanks for the sound advice Southal. I've anchored boats up to 65 foot but the biggest cat boat was a 34'. From what I understand, about 75% of the time there are mooring balls available. But the boat will be equipped with a windless and a bridle. All should be shallow water anchoring barring an emergency. And the route will not be open water for the most part. We will just be island hopping in protected waters. I am guessing those boats come equipped with an anchor/drift alert. I have also heard of apps on your phone/watch that can alert if drifting although not sure how accurate those are. I would also think there are several forums on the internet dedicated to renting sailboats in the carribean.

I'm sure the bottom is a little different there but I don't think anchoring will be the hurdle. Yes there are plenty of YouTube channels and forums with a ton of info. My wife has a friend and her and her husband go every year. But they are avid sailors. We are supposed to meet with them soon so I have a ton of questions to ask them as well. I think the more I research the sailing thing the more I think I could get into it.

Sounds like a perfect opportunity to make an episode of Vacations Gone Wrong. Some things should be left to the pros Yeah. I'm not good at leaving it to the pros. And it's got me in trouble before. You would think I would learn.

Only sailed once. 1987. Magic carpet. Never again.
