If you had access to either one, which would you prefer to plant your plots?

Cultipacker. Drag can be diy made much easier and cheaper than a cultipacker.

experience is a freakin' awesome teacher....

Depends on the soil. Packer doesn’t work in dried out prairie dirt.

I'd love to have a cultipacker, but can't see paying the $$$ people are asking for them. So, a drag it is.

Really depends on what you're planting. Cultipacker for very small seeds and clover. I'd rather drag cereal grains to get them deeper and coverered

Cultipacker works good if you have good dirt. If you’re doing the bushhogging spread seed and disk in method it doesn’t work well when a drag does. I’ve done it both ways for years and have good results both ways.

We borrowed a 10' wide pull behind cultipacker that worked well. It was a PITA to have to load it on a trailer to move to different parts of our land. Then we bought a 8' wide, 3 pt. hitch type cultipacker that didn't cover the larger seeds very well. Wound up having to use a drag.

If you’re using a disc to prep the field, use a drag to cover.

If you’re using a tiller to prep the field, use a cultipacker.

In my experience using a disc leaves big clods of dirt and the cultipacker doesn’t seem to be as effective with the mounds. Using a tiller and getting it like powder is where the cultipacker shines

That’s cause a cultipacker is not designed to cover seeds. It simply presses them into soil contact

Drag for 90% of what I plant but I have been thinking of making a homemade cultipacker with a piece of corrugated plastic pipe. Several videos out there on how to

Cultipackers work great as long as your fields look as flat as a kitchen table and even then they will still find a hump or ridge. Mine's 30ft. It won't mash dirt mounds or ridges flat. I don't care how much it weighs.

I would get a short one for food plots don't think you need one over 6-7ft. My center section is 10ft and I have issues with soil contact the preparation is critical.

But they do work good and seem to help if you have really loose soils which I have.

If you guys come across a old style 5' Harrow for a old farmall (pull behind) they work damn great . Even in soft dirt you can run fully open and it'll cover seed just right , oats and wheat .

Leaves the field looking neat too. I hate tracks in my fields

Cultipacker, landscape rake turned backwards, then a drag in that order.
