It was very thick mostly stands of planted pines. It was also hunted hard. Deer were hard to see.
I was on a either sex dog drive one day with 20 hunters and no one even shot a deer!

Deer and turkey were present in decent numbers. It was a good option in the 70s-80s when my dad hunted it but was probably over-pressured by the time I got into it mid 90s. I kinda miss having public land in SW AL that isn’t 90% swamp.

Rough. Actually had really good numbers of game on it. Lived about 40 min from it. Never deer hunted it but saw plenty of deer while turkey hunting it, late 90s. Easy terrain, typical south Bama piney woods, Sandhill bucks, small bodies, nothing special rack wise. Main issue was the sheer number of pure low class trash hunting it. You could be parked and already sitting down working a bird at 7:30 and they’d park behind your truck and walk in right by you. Or, if they were the more considerate type, they’d just stop at your truck, see if your toolbox was unlocked or if you’d accidentally left anything in the bed that they wanted to steal and then bark on an owl call, make a bunch of noise, or intentionally squawk on a box call to mess you up the bird you were on. Now that it’s been taken back private, I’m sure all those same Citronelle, Vinegar Bend, Mount Vernon, Calvert, and McIntosh locals that felt the WMA was “their personal land”, are just poaching the hell out of whomever has it now. Don’t get me wrong, some great people live in those towns too, but there’s a lot of trash there also. Only place I’ve ever felt the need to carry a pistol on my hip, while toting a semi auto shotgun and turkey hunting. I can only imagine what it was like in deer season.
