Any of y’all ever planted? Read it’s the same as rape. Gunna make a half attempt at planting some. Half meaning not going to pull soil sample and fulfill its recommendations. Adding a little lime and fertilizer when planting. Looking at making it a secondary 1/4 acre plot.

I've thought I had tried about everything, never thought about this.

Could you be thinking about Carinata? It’s in brassica family and fairly new to the scene. Canola has been grown for oil production for a long time.

I guess I meant to say new to the southeast possibility

I have planted it a few times on my S. IL lease. I purchase the seed from Tecomate. I had a guide in IL tell me that was his secrete plot ingredient before it become public information. I honestly haven't seen anything special about it when I planted it.

I’m definitely not expecting much. Caught my curiosity more than anything.

If the deer have never eaten canola, I would plant something with it to get them started. Just a thought.

Will definitely throw wheat for second split of dove season. Calling for up to 5” of rain. Going to see how it goes after that. Ground is powder dry

I just looked into planting some because it seemed interesting. It seems like it may like neutral to basic soils. Is that right? If so, I'm out. The only spot I have left is probably somewhere in the low 5's....heck, maybe upper 4's.

Says 5-8 ph range. I didn’t pull a soil test on mine. Put out 80lbs of lime and a bag of 15-15-15, on a quarter acre. Have about 35$ in this plot. Have another plot in the same field and doing it better

After two rain events from remnants of hurricanes it has come to my attention that the canola didn’t germinate well at all. What did come up looks like deer should hammer it. I think the volunteer millet might have choked it out, or to much/ little rain between planting and now. I’ll keep an eye on it.

I planted several brassicas, including rape(but that seed is couple years old) Sept 23 ahead of a strong rain forecast. Got NOTHING out of Helene but got what I’m betting is was 3/4-1” last weekend based on radar watching. I pulled samples at the same time and just made it to the co-op on my way home. I tried to take them the previous trip up but the ground was so dry I couldn’t get my soil probe past two inches. My low pH is 5.6 which isn’t ideal but workable. I’m headed up this weekend with pulverized lime hoping to correct as it starts to grow. I do everything throw n mow at my place with small 1/3ac or less plots.
