I planted the fields at my house yesterday. I barely have a deer population but I have seen a couple young bucks lately and there is no food for them other than natural browse. I already had the wheat I have been top sowing for the doves. Mixed 50-50 with oats yesterday and covered. My plan is to let the Wheat and Oats hopefully sprout after this weekend's rain then go back later and top dress Durano clover. Im not planning to fertilize until everything is emerged and I see more rain chances. Praying for rain in the 7-10 day window so they dont burn up in this drought. At worse Im out about $45 right now. Got one more lil patch to sow at the end of my hay field where I moved my feeder. Plan to wait and put a brassica mix with clover down there. Taking the risk and praying for rain.

Shoukd b ton of rain w this tropical - may not hav to pray very hard 🤣🤣😀 This week's rain will be sufficient, its what happens 10-20 days after that. We got rain to germinate last year then zero for 3-4 weeks. All died.

45$ ain't such a bad bet. Sounds like you are enjoying it ! Yeah $45 is nothing when it come to something you love to do. If it works out great... if it dosen't...well you can't put a price on fun.

Earlier you can plant the brassicas the better off they will perform. You're gambling with the rain on them but if you get just a little here and there, and load them up with the nitrogen, they will explode. It was powder this week so I have to wait. Ive never specifically planted brassicas. This is a new small plot about 1/8 of an acre in the corner of my hayfield. I saw the Co-op had a blend mostly clover but had Triticale, and a couple other brassicas. The only reason I want to sow something there is to help invite them to the feeder out in the open. They only cross my place at night to move north along a hedge row to ag fields. I got a small plot in woods in the mountain behind the house where I got about 11 acres of poor habitat. A few oaks in the 30yrold range that are producing some now. I did some hinge cutting up there last couple of years to create some bedding. There may be a few that bed now but they only come off the hill to my feeder at night or occasionally mid day while we all at work and school. We occasionally see them crossing my field at night. Not enough to really hunt but just a hobby. My thought was put in something they would hit late winter and I can watch from my shop. I wont need much seed, what do yall recommend?

By the looks of that spread, I think you can handle a little food plot bill. lol.
Pretty place and set up. It will be paid for when my wife gets my life insurance check

Well the 10" rain washed out a couple of my lil fields pretty bad. I will have to turn them over next spring and may have to move in some topsoil. I top sown clover yesterday. Also the new plot I marked in yellow was sown yesterday in Whitetail institute Beats and Greens. It recommended to cultipack but said do not cover with a drag. There was still good soil moisture so I just ran over the whole area with the wide tires on my tractor and just used it to cultipack. Guess we will see soon. Hopefully we get more rain next week and the tires pushed the seed into good ground contact.

I used to do the same thing with rubber tracks when trying to get good soil contact for DOT seed on a state right away. It worked great.

Left for the opener in Illinois last week with good green and clover emerging. Came home to brown dirt. Dried out and died in a week. No more call for rain this week. The new plot I put in still has some radish and brassicas still alive but I doubt them after another dry week. Yall remind me next year not to even touch a spreader until after Oct 20th. At least I was smart enough to wait and not fertilize.
