The dead are typically buried under houses, and kitchens and trash dump spots. That is where we find most of them. About how deep Jason? I'm surprised my mom and dad didn't dig up anything like that digging the footers for the house. There were and still are some strange things that happen in that house. Front door opens by itself, breakers turn themselves off, even the dog is scared to go in the den.

You cant determine depth from the surface until you dig, because you dont know how much of the surface has been lost to soil deflation. It may sound strange, but I have seen many fields with burials near the surface that were originally dug 7 feet deep. You may have read about archaeologists finding stuff in pits, but they may only be talking about the very bottom 5 inches of a pit. The other 5 feet above got deflated away from soil erosion caused by bad modern agriculture.

Don't dig. That messes up the archeological value of the site. As long as y'all are finding surface stuff, be happy with that. I've known plenty of people that dug and what they were looking for were whole pots. Some even had probes that they would stick in the ground in search of the pots. They said you could tell the difference between hitting a pot and hitting a rock.
Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

I/we found one in college on a dig. That was a very weird feeling. Took measurements and photos and covered her back up. You never forget something like that. Looks like you got a good site Chad

When people talk about Soil Erosion you dont fully understand it until you dig into it several different places and actually see the difference. An archaeological site on true unplowed ground east of the Mississippi is a rare thing. I have found a few but they are always is the the most ass-ate up impossible for anything to get into swamps.
Some places though are split between the woods and maybe a swamp bank and you can find small spots across a site. If you split-profile dig it , you can see the erosion line and calculate the depth of the soil loss for the site. A large site in NW Montgomery Co, sortof close to the Lowndes line, there is a site where I measured off 1.8 meters of soil loss since the first mule plow broke the soil, about 1820's.
