I normally plant around the 1st week of October but I'm thinking about prepping this week and getting it in the ground after this rain event. The Gulf is looking like we should be getting some more rain after this one.

Thoughts ?

I planted some before this round of rain, will plant some more later. Mainly planted stuff that need extra days of growth before first frost.

Yep, think this is going to be one of those rare years where conditions will support early planted brassicas. I have a small spot I got out ahead of this rain.

I’ve planted 7 acres of clover and brassicas only with a drill. I’m going to wait on everything else until October.

We planted and have gotten 2 good rains on it with more forecast. I plant by rain forecast, not a calendar. We get zero rain here in October.

Ole 257 put around fifty acres in the ground a couple days ago before the rain hit, he’s happy. Not going to question a man that has farming in his blood.

Yea, I've been planting plots since the early 90's. It's all about moisture, not a calendar. After September 1st, I look for temp drop and a significant rain event. Usually it's a hurricane or tropical storm.

Going to top seed into some clover patches tomorrow and may plant a brassica plot. Going to wait on everything else another couple weeks.

There's really no need in being in a rush to get them in......"Normal" planting times really arent until later in the fall.....Folks tend to push the front end of the planting window simply due to the opening bow season dates

Actually, if you look on the the seed bags, it plainly states September thru October, but again these are calendar dates. Plant 30 days before the first frost. It's according to what your planting. Brassicas should be planted earlier than cereal grains. Plant when you want to, but I've been doing this for 30 years and when I've planted using the throw and mow method ahead of a significant rain event, I've had zero problem. Maybe some of yall get good rainfall in October, the driest month, in Alabama. We don't. Upper alabama versus lower alabama are 2 different things.

Still mighty early, what's the rush? Still plenty of time for it to be hot and dry, like last year.

We disked all the club plots Saturday. Probably sling seed ahead of the next rain.

We planted September 7. Deer are already eating the sprouts.

Haven’t broken the ground in pike county yet. Ground has plenty of moisture this year so I may plant soon. Saw where the deer were eating milk weed. Also saw a set of triplet fawns this morning while dumping out a buck muffin. They may not have been triplets but there were three with one large doe.

What I planted at my house is likely in the Tennessee River by now. Hope what the boys planted at our club is not all in the bottom of a Holler.

I just plant when I have time. It will come up when it rains. Will plant one property this weekend and another in a couple weeks.

We planted November 10th-ish last year due to drought in NW Alabama.. Wheat..clover..rye grain..had best year we ever had

I've planted first week of Nov. last two years , plots as good as any I've ever had. There is absolutely no reason to plant gun hunting plots before Oct 15 anywhere in Alabama.

Planting times, are according to what you want to plant. Brassicas need to be planted in September to have good tuber growth. I want bow season food plots. If I had to wait until November, I'd probably just not plant, and just feed corn. If it turns cold early, cereal rye, would be a good alternative if you want to plant that late.

When I want a "bow plot"... I just put a corn feeder out. No reason to plant this early IMO. Don't understand why people think cool weather is going to "kill" their plots? NOT how that works.

Got a good rain in the forecast but I'm afraid the seed will germinate then the typical October Drought will happen. May not be an issue just don't have time to do it 2x or fool with it later.

Mid-September plantings always have a lot of weeds germinate IMO.

We were going to wait till the first of Oct or so on ours but when the forecast for Helene changed late last week we went ahead and got all of them in on Saturday and Sunday

I'm glad we haven't planted yet. Several of our plots are sloped and would get washed out with this mess coming from the gulf.

I have fairly sandy fields, and just for this reason, I typically wait till the seed germinates and the grains are up and going before broadcasting the fertilizer. Usually plant mid to late Oct, then broadcast trip 13 just before a nice rain in Nov. I want those roots to be actively working when the fertilizer hits the root zone.

Lack of good infiltration and run off is what causes is no matter when you put fertilizer out......All of that heavy run off is carrying topsoil and fertilizer with it

Got 1 inch in the gauge so far. A lot more to come. Luckily my plots have almost zero grade to them and are in very loamy soil. Also they were all disced up after the rain we had a couple of weeks ago and the seed bed is deep. I think It'll handle the monsoon's that are coming.

You'll be able to look at it and tell afterwards......Just assess the amount of washing you had occur......If you look it up there are different levels of soil erosion to gauge how bad....I think the pic above would be considered "gulley erosion"

Those pics have a good bit more slope than I have, but we will see.

There is no runoff in the blackbelt where I just planted. There is not 10' of elevation change on the whole property. I Like to get it growing before the heavy rains start in what is usually November and it all turns to soup.

My plots are looking good, heavy thatch on top, green sprouts coming up thru it. Everything working good this year.

Planted a remote plot in the woods Tuesday before the storm. Waiting until October to plant the main plots. Bushhogged the main plots.

Gonna plant Saturday......I got a feeling that with a good coverage of hay it'll sprout just the same as if l planted before the rain.....We'll see

I was watching radar intently. We missed every bit of rain by only maybe 5 miles. I planted last weekend expecting that with such a close call we’d at least get a couple inches. If nothing else maybe the wind will settle everything to the soil line. My effort was all throw, no mow, so far.

They're saying another hurricane is gonna form in the gulf next week

3 3/4 inches since Wed. But it's been a light to medium soaking rain with surprisingly little runoff. and the ground is taking it all in. Now if we get this same amount in another week it'll be a different story.

One week after planting......Its sprouting pretty well to have not gotten rained on yet.

Only have 2 fields out of 8 planted

We spread seed last Friday. I'm not sure how many inches we got but it was a nice soaking rain.

We put fertilizer out today, planting tomorrow. Praying for rain.
