By Brennan Crain Published: Sep. 10, 2024 at 10:47 AM MDT|Updated: 5 hours ago GLASGOW, Ky. (WBKO) – The Kentucky Fish and Wildlife has charged nine people with 180 charges related to their alleged involvement in an illegal catfish operation. Kentucky Fish and Wildlife said an investigation earlier this year found thousands of pounds of catfish were harvested from Barren River Lake on 71 separate occasions. The lake is closed to commercial fishing. The illegally harvested fish were then sold to a Green Valley Pay Lake in Glasgow, according to the Kentucky Fish and Wildlife investigation. Officials said the owner of the pay lake knowingly purchased the fish. The individuals selling the fish were not licensed commercial fishermen, and the pay lake did not document any of their transactions as required by law, KYFW said. Two of the nine accused allegedly caught about 6,400 pounds of catfish from waterways in Alabama and transported them to Kentucky. They were sold to the same pay lake. The Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Law Enforcement Division provided WBKO with the names of five out of the nine individuals charged in connection with the scheme. Melinda Carter, of Glasgow, a pay lake operator, faces pending court proceedings. She has been charged with 81 counts of buying, selling, and transporting protected wildlife, along with two counts of violating regulations related to pay lake operations. Danny Whitmire, 50, of Town Creek, Alabama, a commercial fisherman, also faces pending court proceedings. He is charged with seven counts of buying, selling, and transporting protected wildlife, and two counts of violating regulations due to not having a transportation permit and a live fish/bait dealer’s license. April White, 46, of Bridgeport, Alabama, a commercial fisherman, is facing similar charges, with court proceedings still pending. White has been charged with seven counts of buying, selling, and transporting protected wildlife, and two counts of regulatory violations for lacking a transportation permit and a live fish/bait dealer’s license. Samuel Hatcher, 45, of Glasgow, Kentucky, pled guilty to 9 counts of size and creel violations, resulting in a $450 fine. Hatcher was a cooperating witness along with others in his boat. Brandon Patrick, 30, of Glasgow, Kentucky, has been charged with 68 counts of buying, selling, and transporting protected wildlife, 4 counts of violating commercial fishing regulations, and various license/permit violations. Court proceedings are pending. Many of the fish caught in Alabama were trophy-sized and weighed more than 60 pounds in some cases. The Barren County Attorney’s Office said 81 charges are related to violations of a state law governing the transportation of protected wildlife. One charge was linked to a regulation governing licensing of pay lakes. There is a possible penalty of the license being revoked, according to the Barren County Attorney’s Office. County Attorney Mike Richardson said his office does not comment on pending matters and declined to provide additional details. WBKO has contacted the Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Department for additional information about the other four individuals involved in the alleged scheme. The Kentucky Fish and Wildlife game wardens, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, Alabama Game and Fish Division and the Barren County Attorney’s Office assisted in the investigation.
