The Sheriff departments boat we have in our area has a 250 Optimax on it. It has been in the shop more times then I can count. Mainly fuel pump issues. But there is always some kind of little issue with that thing. I’ve been trying to convince the new Sheriff to purchase a new 300hp to power that boat. I think that optimax is under powered.

Mercury optimax went from total junk to halfway decent around 05-06…i say halfway decent because you could kinda sorta afford to work onem vs some other stuff…but…ni they do not have a steller track record above about 90 hp…if tohatsu built it its pretty good…if its one of thearlier yamamerc 4 strokes…its aight still will have some of the corosion issues they had…if its a full blown mercury product…uhh..hard for me to spend money on one. Now…the non direct injection efi mercury from the early 2000’s…i dont know of many golks havin alot of issues with them…the early optis had all kinds of problems…bout like omc ficht engines…but way less talked about. I know they had some problems with injectors and fuel rail stuff…cause ive watched two catch fire and burn half the boat up. Yamaha broke the code on 2 stroke hpdi…they had some issues…but after like 04ish it was baskeepin screens cleaned..we had an 07 an i bet thag thing had 1000hrs or more when it sold an was runnin like a scalded dog…250 4 stroke yams now and nary a real issue.

The best non hpdi fuel injected outboard ever made is a ox66 injected yamaha…in their day…and still today..one of the most reliable 2 stroke engines on earth…before that…omc big carbed gas hogs were king…i owned several..some electric problems and vro disabling..but crank an run every time..but we could all say something bad about every brand if we think long enough…I absolutely would never own a verado of any kind…and i am extremely cautious of mercurys new 4 strokes…ive talked to several folks..an its about 50/50…some love them..some have had nothing but problems…big motors..i think mercury little tohatsu clones are about as reliable as anything else.

150 with 300 hours on it. 2015 model I hate that for you…we always had a sayin around here…if its black, it wont make it back…that was geared mainly toward mercurys older big motors from the 70’s an up…mercury always made good power…but…you had to keepem runnin first..i dont mean to sound bad..mercury was always on the cutting edge of technology competing with omc…as far as i know they made the firs fuel injected motor in like 1990..i think it was like an xr1..xLr1..something like that…very primitive efi tech..had “electronic fuel injection” in cursive on the cowl…been a long time since i seen one…they had problems…lots of problems…the pro max that came a little later was like one of the most powerful plug and play engines ever made..i forget exactly what you could do to those things…you could flip something around or add something an it would like instantly ad 40-50 hp to them…but…ive seen a couple of them explode…throtle hung up on one an it pitched a piston out at the boat ramp.it was one of the square ones..not the funky 2 piece alien cowl.

The big hpdi yamahas had some sho nuff problems…I should’ve said they broke the code on havin..less problems..to this day i wont own a yam hpdi bigger than 200..an id have to look at them hard…i forget..why they say not to go bigger than 200 an only certain ones..i think there were two different engine displacements an one was shared with the 150 an the 200..an i think the other was shared with the 200,225,250…this is the one that has issues…its been so long since i read all that. I try to say nice things about every boat motor..i love boats…i just find it harder to say them about mercury sometimes…i ran one for years..an it operated flawlessly until it got hard to start….when we switched to yamaha 4 strokes…all the stupid 2 stroke hpdi holes you had to jump through ceased to exist…they have been flawless.
