You on Lay? I went over Monday and couldn't find any in Paint creek. Places that have held big schools the previous 2 summers just haven't held them this year. I finally went up river and started finding small groups, but they were nice fish. The only larger schools I found were 7-9" fish with no big ones. I had a decent day, but never saw the big schools I used to see on Lay. I think I need to start fishing further up the river.

It's been easy to find big schools on Martin all summer. They don't always bite aggressively, but they are always there. If a fellow just wants to catch crappie, he can go to Martin and fish the bridges with minnows and catch them most any time.

Yes. Saw some in paint on standing timber one day a week or two ago, the big group was on a long point across the river in front of the public boat ramp the other big group was on timber a couple hundred yards in the creek just before the narrows on the right if you are going up river

Me and a buddy caught quite a few this weekend from the kayaks. Almost every one of them was 4-6' down. Water temp was 75-ish, I think. We pulled probably 20 small ones (8-10") off 1 single tree, and probably 7 or 8 in the 10-12" range out from under a floating dock in 20' of water (bites were still only 4-6' down though). The few bigger ones we caught (a couple of 12-14" and one that was a hair over 15") were all solo.

What's weird is you could dangle a live minnow right in front of their nose and they wouldn't touch it, but you could vertical jig a Bobby Garland monkey milk in the exact same spot and they'd hammer it.

Every bite we got was pretty aggressive

Well I went to the furthest brush pile first, only had little ones in it 14 ft water
Went to a brush top in the back of a hollow channel 13ft water 10-12”ers
Fished some wood on a bluff wall 16ft water 10-12”ers
Pulled up on a flat to fish some stumps 10ft water 14-16”ers
Big wood in 32ft water suspended at 12-15ft water 9-12”ers
Pretty much scattered out, I caught some in open water schools, tried to scope some singles but I haven’t mastered that yet…

I think the time is here:

A free tip - I was given a BPS gift card and spent some time just scrolling through their baits looking for something new that might appeal to schooling bass and crappie. A lot of baits will catch them but they get wise in a hurry, so I like to keep several rods rigged with different lures to give them a different look. I saw this walleye bait and thought they oughta like it, and they did. For at least one day, these preferred it over the jigging rap and everything else I had. We didn't catch but one bass on it, but I only saw one school and that was the only time we tried to fish for them.
