T&M guys- what seeds are you planting? What rate per acre?

I've been doing straight wheat with WMS Clover Feast on couple wet plots, but planning to plant wheat, rye grain and clover on rest of fields. Just can't decide lbs per acre of each?

Thanks in advance!

A little clover goes a long way if it's spread correctly.

I'd do 50lb wheat, 50lb cereal rye, and 6lbs crimson per acre, if that's your mix. I planted, brassicas, oats, and 3 clovers on some fields and rye and clovers on others.

6 sounds right. 10 pounds per acre max. They say it takes more moisture out of the ground than what it's competing against.

Sorry should’ve been more specific. I know what clovers I’m planting based on soil types etc. Just trying to figure out how many lbs per acre of wheat and rye.

I like 100 lbs of oats and 50 lbs each of wheat/rye. 50 lbs of each of all 3 should give you what you want.

83% of all statistics are made up.

I'd up my crimson clover rate about 30-35% to accommodate for the seed coating. Most Crimson clover in todays time comes preinoculated with coating to protect the inoculant. Obviously the added coating weight takes away from the actual number of seeds.

High deer densities need heavier applications such as what N2TRKYS suggests.

Most of the time those rates aren’t enough. 🙁

If you’re trying for a dedicated clover plot, you’ll need about 40 lbs to the acre of perennial clover mixed with about 20 lbs of rye. For everything else I typically double the recommended rate.

40# of perennial clover? Holy shite. 8# an acre for durana per acre, of course you need to go at 10# due to coating weight.

This is the blend we’ve been using for several years. 1500 pounds wheat, 1000lbs Elbon rye,50lbs each of crimson clover and purple top turnips, 5700lbs 17-17-17 and 200lbs sulphur (have high ph in chalky areas).Mix it all together, put in a five ton buggy, open the gate to five and let it rip. Does 16 to 17 acres. I don’t use oats because we will have ryegrass patches that need to be sprayed with Axial.

I’ve heard other people talk about that too. I just don’t see the need yet. Been getting great stands of clover at 12-15 lbs to the acre for a very long time. At 40 lbs to the acre you’re looking at $350 per acre for seed alone. 🤔

That’s pure live seed. Add the coating and the 15-20% of seed that isn’t viable and you’ll need 8 lbs at least.

Rolled the dice and planted powerline plot yesterday. This plot holds a lot of water during winter so wanted to try and give it a head start. Hope we get rain Thurs or Fri.

Question for you T&M experts. What do you think about plan below? Would you change anything on the T&M plan. Fertilizer will be applied at around 260 lb acre and top dress with 150 lb acre of 34-0-0 in late december.

I'm going to try something new this year. Due to my deer population I am going to T&M 50 lb acre cereal rye and 10 lb acre of Fixation clover. I will come over the top of the T&M with my 606nt and drill 100 lb acre of WMS AL Blend.

Squeaky,

I did something very similar. I also have very high density and due to my ocd, I don't like the way my winter fields look when I drill them. It takes them until spring to "crown out" and fill in, so all winter you are looking at perfect rows. I broadcast 25lb of Elbon rye, then I come over the top with my no till drill and drill wheat, oats and the remaining 25lb per acre of rye. In the small seed box I had a mix of approx. 13 lbs per acre of clovers.

I am going to hold off until the first few weeks of November and come back and fertilize.

Squeaky, I see no reason that wouldn't work, with adequate moisture.

Yeah my OCD and high deer population are my only issues with strictly no till. On my properties with a lower deer population or larger plots I get a good crown by December and field look awesome. Thank you for the feed back! thumbup

We have caught some rain and Helene gave us a good amount also. We caught another shower over the weekend as well. When I was over a week ago it was wet....wet. I'm thinking I will have adequate moisture to drill into a week from now hopefully.

the fixation will add very little to any browse through deer season , like perennial clover, it spends most of its energy establishing a root system first then to shoot growth. i’d add some crimson if u want any forbs with the grain

I don't do throw and mow with wheat in it anymore. It just turns into a turkey feeding frenzy unless rain is coming quickly. They don't seem to lock into cereal rye, but there are more rye seeds per pound.

In fact this year I didn't even buy wheat. Just cereal rye.

I have had a tough time getting that to grow. Arrowleaf on the other hand, its awesome. And it stays green until mid june. I am waiting to see how it reseeds on one plot in particular.
