I prefer walnut for my M70 rifles.

We can absolutely agree that a pretty piece of walnut is amazing! Beautiful!

Was just on the Winchester website looking at the Model 70 Super Grade... I really have no need for another firearm, but one of these days I'd love to own a Super Grade. Maybe in a classic caliber like 270 Winchester or 3006 Springfield. Fun things to dream about...

That said to set up an American with a decent stock and trigger will set you back another 500 (B&C stock and Timney trigger)

Technically, the American has a shoulder on the barrel that prevents the barrel nut from screwing on too far ahead of the receiver but that shoulder is of no consequence when assbleing the gun. The barrel nut sits back 2-3 threads from that shoulder when properly assembled and headspaced.

The Savage 110 has no shoulder. The threads just stop. This also prevents the barrel nut from going to far forward. Again, the barrel nut sits back from the en of the threads.

The Hawkeye Rem 700, Bergara, Winchester Mod 70, Weatherby, etc etc DO have a shoulder that mates up to the receiver to set the headspace. This requires considerably more machining and labor to set the headspace properly which is hy these rifle cost so much more than the American or Savage ... Well that and the fact they usually have better stocks and finishes.

If I were looking for a new rifle, I'd be looking for a Bergara in my caliber of choice

Does Bergara have a model that is stainless with a nice wood stock? Everyone I’ve seen has those ugly composite splatter or camo or digital stuff with a spiral bolt or something. I know all those things make it shoot better. But if I have to sit in my tree stand for 3.5 hours I at least want a pretty rifle to look at 😂

Pwyse, I too was looking for a nice wood and stainless rifle. They are definitely hard to find. I’m not a fan of the maple either. A few months ago I settled on a Browning Xbolt White Gold Medallion in walnut. Beautiful gun.

I actually like the looks of the new American II. For a $699 rifle they did a great job with it.

To each his own, but that splatter paint, a sponge on the top of the stock, and the twistie barrel make it the Browning Recoilless of rifles.

In my humble opinion.

if you like chassis rifles, check out the indian creek chassis for them. i got one bc the butt pad is adjustable on the “buffer tube” to the rear of the chassis. 2 allen screws and my kids can shoot it or extended it for normal lop

Meh let's face it.they are all Tupperware crap until you pay out
All the rifles are economy crap nowadays imo
You gotta spend coins to get something good or worth having or knowledgeable enough to swap out stock and trigger on some.

Tikka , maybe new weatherby 307 I think it is,kimber ,howa 1500, Browning x bolt and weatherby vanguard are only rifles worth having under $1000 and the weatherby I have zero experience with .heck even the cheaper bergaras aren't so cool anymore.bargain hunters

I'd build a custom or get something good otherwise you get the super cheap stocks.ruger American stocks are absolute garbage as with most sub $1500 rifles but Ruger American stocks are ugly and suck the most.lol

No Tupperware here except one of my two Tikka rifles.and my zytel stocked Ruger m77 not exactly flimsy garbage compared to others.lol

Unfortunately they are all cheaply made crap now days.

I'll be rolling out with hand layed fiberglass stocks and wood I glass bedded also with custom chambers and throats in my custom barrels for only a few more dollars of a mass produced piece of garbage

And then not that it matters to most hunters but you'll have a copper mine of a barrel on vast majority of rifles being sold besides a Tikka..
Do your share of barrel break ins like I have and you'll learn who makes barrels that are smooth and lapped......
Y'all are being sold junk rough barrels and don't know it.

Yeah attack the guy who says different than status quo.i like being odd man in the know

I can prove y'all wrong all day if accuracy and ease of barrel cleaning are your thing.

But again just to kill a deer y'all will do fine.lol

You tell'em 3%...If only Team Savages Matt Alwine hadn't won Nrs and Prs titles back to back with that ugly Savage 112 in .25 Creedmore we would all shoot Rigby Highlanders @$9000.00 each.

Lol , most hunters can't shoot a $5000 setup no better than they can a $500 set up . Gun dont make the hunter a hunter.

You shoot a boat paddle M77 and have the nerve to call another manufacturer’s stock ugly?? 🤣

Tupperware is a fine brand and works great for what it is designed for. I don’t need a custom rifle to shoot a deer at 200 yards. I just want a pretty wood stock/stainless gun that can shoot decent.

And I love the M77 but ditch the boat paddle stock man.

Meh it's zytel and very sturdy compared to injection molded plastic
I bet you didn't know the first m16 stocks where made from zytel

Good luck finding a boat paddle Ruger under $1000
Even then back in day accuracy was hit or miss.

I can out shoot every damn one if you with mine though. no doubt
Got lucky mines a shooter but I can load ammo like very few know how 🤣

So to answer your question u wouldn't buy either you mentioned

I have a boat paddle .30-06 and it’s a shooter. I love it. I paid $260 for it brand new around 1992-93 or so when I was in the 9th grade.

But it has a pretty stock on it now thanks to a very good ALdeer friend! I sure don’t care how sturdy the zytel is. I do t use my guns for a hammer.

Rugers are good guns. I have 3. I have the M77 but not the American Gen 1 or Gen 2 - but have rebuilt several M77s and American Gen 1's. Here is my low down:

M77 are good shooters but you need to free float the barrel and replace the trigger. I've had triggers as stiff as 7 lbs. If you glass bed the receiver, free float the barrel and replace the trigger you will have a very fine shooter.

American Gen 1 - the pillar bedding of the American is great. Stocks are flimsy and cheap. The magazine and feed is poor at times and the action is sometimes a little rough. M77 action is much smoother. Trigger is adjustable but still a little questionable - I would replace the trigger. Due to the pillar bedding, the Gen 1 are very accurate right out of the box. The American is probably the best bang for the buck of any hunting rifle. You can spend a little (modest) money with a stock and trigger upgrade and have a fine rifle. If you are a "one shot" kind of hunter the American Gen 1 is outstanding. The roughness/tightness of the bolt and the feed makes a fast follow up 2nd shot a little uncomfortable at times. If you are a 2nd shot kind of hunter, invest in the upgrades (stock and trigger) or just by a Tikka.

American Gen 2 - I have not shot or worked on a Gen 2 but some of the reviews on youtube are outstanding. Based on the youtube reviews, the trigger is better, the feed is much, much better. The stock is still a bit flimsy so if you use on of those gripping shooting tripods be aware that the grip can deflect the stock into the barrel and cause potential accuracy issues. The pricing of the Gen 2 is a little higher than the Gen 1 - but it is still a great value.
